Fresh off of the success of the acclaimed television miniseries adaptation on Netflix, production company Level Forward has acquired the theatrical stage rights to the original Walter Tevis novel, The Queen’s Gambit, to turn it into a stage musical. No creative team nor timeline has been revealed yet.

There was already an unsuccessful musical about chess.

The Queen’s Gambit was my favorite television production of 2020, but I just don’t see the material adapting well to the stage. It’s a great story, but better suited to the page or to a close-up visual medium.
