Audra was AMAZING in 110 in the Shade for sure!! I do think I still would have voted for Christine Ebersole, but OH MY GOD Audra McDonald was still so good as Lizzie.

I was too young when “Carousel” came out to see it, but just listening to the recording she seems to kill it! Carrie Pepperidge is one of my favorite R&H characters.

Other than “Ragtime” and “110”, I did see her in “Marie Christine”. While the show was very dark and not the strongest, she was definitely the highlight and I wouldn’t have minded her winning for that even (though Mazzie and Luker were also worthy).

I saw Carousel in May of 1994, and the moment Audra took the stage leading that line of children, it was like being electrocuted. The woman just had MAGIC and I knew two seconds after I first saw her she was going to be a huge, huge star. And now here we are five Tonys later.

That was like how I felt with “Ragtime” only it came with her singing Your Daddy’s Son….I mean she sat on the stage and just held a baby and barely, if at all, moved and she had me transfixed even at the age of ten. I obviously didn’t grasp the concept that she already was a three-time Tony winner (I didn’t even know of her in Carousel at that point), but I was hooked on her since then.

I feel like she was definitely the breakout star of the 90s theatre. Just like Sutton Foster was of the 2000s and Laura Osnes seems to be on the verge of being this decade’s.

To give this thread some life again, I thought about maybe doing some lists of our favorite perfomances of Broadway (this can include both plays AND musicals) that we have seen….and you can also include ones you have seen via video….and comment upon ones you have heard via cast recording.

I will have to comment later on my own list as I am short on time, but I do want to mention one person to get the ball rolling.

I think my favorite performance in a musical from this past decade was from Victoria Clark in “The Light in the Piazza”. Truly luminous, stunning, beautiful, and absolutely powerful….and it was also a little surprising because prior to her work in this, I had only known her from her more “best-friend, comedic, supporting” type roles such as Smitty in the Matthew Broderick/Megan Mullally revival of “How to Succeed” or the comic female role in “A Grand Night for Singing” and she absolutely nailed Margaret Johnson….not to mention the show itself was absolutely glorious with a breathtaking score and not to mention Matthew Morrison was at his best (though questionable as an Italian) and Kelli O’Hara gave one of her best performances.

    More to come later!
