Does anyone have any feeling as to who the nominees will be for the Featured Actress in a Musical category? Lindsay Mendez has been getting strong early feedback for Carousel (which rumor has it is a mess). How are we feeling regarding Lilli Cooper for Spongebob? Do the women from Prince if Broadway stand a chance?

^there have been criticisms of Lindsay Mendez’s accent as not being acceptable from someone who is supposed to be from New England…

The young women from Mean Girls; Once On This Island; The Band’s Visit – it’s hard to say who exactly in these ensemble casts will pop out and be recognized by the committee.

I am so hoping for Lindsay Mendez to be nominated. She’s been bubbling under for so long. Where’d you hear that the new production of Carousel is a mess?

I have a weird feeling about Mean Girls. It doesn’t seem like any of them will be able to stand out (except maybe Barrett Wilbert Weed or Kerry Butler in her multiple comedic roles). It also feels like a lot of the women of The Band’s Visit just fail to stand out against Katrina Lenk.

Same I’ve loved her for so long. Also, early reviews are all over the Broadway.com Message Boards. People are specifically criticizing Jack O’Brien’s direction, some of the designs, and the lack of chemistry among the actors.

Read the preview thread on broadwayworld – there are a few who love it but most on there have issues with the direction, lack of chemistry between Billy and Julie, and Mrs. Mullin and Billy too. They love Henry’s “Soliloquy”, love the score and the singing, but have issues with the design elements, the choreography, and the accents as being wrong for New England characters. Most are unhappy with Jack O’Brien’s direction on there. This doesn’t mean too much, it’s early previews, so take it for what it is, but I find the criticisms feel quite valid and it doesn’t look like there will be all that much they can do to change it between now and the opening… read it for yourself and decide what you think but that was my take on their comments.

Weed and Butler are marvelous in Mean Girls. There’s also the possibility Disney will petition to get Caissie Levy in Featured for Frozen.

Considering the sparse competition, if Levy does manage to get in Featured, she could very well win.

Featured Actress in a Musical seems to be a mystery this year. Despite the early disappointing responses to Carousel, Lindsay Mendez seems to have a shot at a nomination (she is of course in the role that won Audra McDonald her first Tony in the last revival). From the response out-of-town, Barrett Wilbert Weed seems to be the most likely Mean Girls nominee in this category. I guess Emily Skinner and/or Karen Ziemba could sneak in for Prince of Broadway. I wonder if Diana Rigg and/or Lea Salonga could make the cut. While My Fair Lady hasn’t started performances yet, there is quite a bit of excitement over the fact that Rigg is making her first Broadway appearance since Medea 24 years ago in Lincoln Center’s production in the small, yet pivotal role of Mrs. Higgins.
