Based on things I have read and my own hunches here are some names that I think might get nominations this year. Add names you think belong here. Subject to change as reviews come in over the next 6 weeks or so.

Best Featured Actor in a Musical:

Norbert Leo Butz, My Fair Lady
    John Cariani, The Band’s Visit
Quentin Earl Darrington, Once On This Island
    Alexander Gemignani, Carousel
    Grey Henson, Mean Girls
    Gavin Lee, SpongeBob SquarePants
Alex Newell, Once On This Island
    Jonathan Raviv, The Band’s Visit
    Ari’el Stachel, The Band’s Visit

Best Featured Actress in a Musical:

    Kerry Butler, Mean Girls
Merle Dandridge, Once On This Island
    Taylor Louderman, Mean Girls
    Lindsay Mendez, Carousel
    Ashley Park, Mean Girls
    Diana Rigg, My Fair Lady
    Kate Rockwell, Mean Girls
Lea Salonga, Once On This Island
    Barrett Wilber Weed, Mean Girls

Best Featured Actor in a Play:

    Jin Ha, M. Butterfly
    Bill Irwin, The Iceman Cometh
Byron Jennings, Harry Potter & the Cursed Child
    James McArdle, Angels in America
    David Morse, The Iceman Cometh
    Seth Numrich, Travesties
    Lee Pace, Angels in America
    Reg Rogers, The Iceman Cometh
    Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Angels in America
Paul Thornley, Harry Potter & the Cursed Child

Best Featured Actress in a Play:

    Laura Benanti, Meteor Shower
    Susan Brown, Angels in America
Noma Dumezweni, Harry Potter & the Cursed Child (Olivier Award winner)
    Denise Gough, Angels in America
    Amanda Lawrence, Angels in America
Poppy Miller, Harry Potter & the Cursed Child
    Celia Weston, Marvin’s Room

There were a few names that I think are really leads but might get placed in featured, such as Deborah Findlay or Ron Cook, etc. Eligibility rulings will be interesting to watch for…

Which names do you think belong on this list?

Laura Benanti has already been ruled eligible for Featured Actress in a Play.

You can add Kerry Butler to Featured Actress in a Musical. She’s a knockout in Mean Girls.

Summer has some incredible talent in its lineup, so it will be interesting to see category placement there. The show was panned, but the ladies are very gifted.

    Denise Gough, Angels in America
    Amanda Lawrence, Angels in America
Poppy Miller, Harry Potter & the Cursed Child (she won the Olivier award for this role)
    Celia Weston, Marvin’s Room

That was Noma Dumezweni who won the Olivier, not Poppy Miller. I would also add Alex Newell (Once on This Island) and Ari’el Stachel (The Band’s Visit) to the list of contenders for Featured Actor in a Musical.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought Taylor Louderman was being considered as a lead actress for Mean Girls, since she is playing Regina George after all.

We won’t know how category placements will be done for Mean Girls until the Administration Committee decides after they’ve seen it. I’m not too familiar with the original film, but I could see Erika Henningsen and Taylor Louderman competing separately so that they’d both wouldn’t be at risk of vote-splitting.

The word of mouth from the previews of Angels in America is that Lee Pace is at least for now the weakest link in the cast; whether reviewers and Tony panelists will agree is another matter. Garfield (in lead), Denise Gough and James McArdle were the three cited with Olivier award nominations and I expect all 3 will repeat with Tony nominations.

It will be interesting to see which of the Means Girls cast make it into the Tonys this year. It’s hard to figure out from the preview threads, but it does seem to me that Barrett Wilber Weed is getting the most praise of the featured performers. Of the males in the cast Grey Henson has been getting the best word of mouth.

Weed has the best number in the show, a stand-and-deliver power ballad that comes near the climax. Henson doesn’t really have a spotlight number or much of an arc. That’s one of the things they needed to work on from DC.

There is no weak link in the Angels cast. Lee Pace is wonderful

In that case, I’ll probably wait until the Administration Committee makes all their final rulings before I make my predictions.

It is possible that he has found his performance in the preview period; I am only going on what i have read in various threads on various sites I visit regularly and there have been criticisms of his performance as not being fully there yet. Whether their criticisms are valid or not IDK. I would say that James McCardle and Denise Gough are getting the most praise from from the featured cast and Andrew Garfield is being praised to the heavens for his performance. I will be in NYC in May and will see for myself as I will be seeing a number of shows during my 10 day visit!

Erika Henningsen and Taylor Louderman will both be in lead. The show has enough supporting actress contenders so the producers will definitely push Taylor in lead.

If that happens, then it will probably be a struggle for both Erika and Taylor to make the cut in nominations.

Do you guys think Lane will be in Lead? Base on Peretroiska, Cohn has to be featured.

I believe Angels can in 2 or 3 supporting players and you forgot Anthony Boyle for Harry Potter, he won the Olivier. I don’t know about the other featured actor in a Play, maybe someone from Iceman Cometh.

Featured Actress in a Play: Denise Gough.

I personally don’t think Merle Dandridge has a chance, given that she left Once on This Island so early in the season. I’m also apprehensive about Diana Rigg, despite the immense support she seems to have on here, given that her role as Mrs. Higgins is a smaller, non-singing role.

Well, the role of Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady did earn Gladys Cooper an Oscar nomination for the film version.

Of the ladies in Once on This Island, I think Lea Salonga may have the better shot at a nomination.

While Merle Dandridge did take a leave of absence from the production a couple months ago, don’t forget that Jonathan Groff left Hamilton about a month before Tony nominations were announced, and he was still nominated for Featured Actor in a Musical. Of course, Hamilton was such a juggernaut, it was really no surprise that Groff would get carried along for a nomination.
