An interesting development is going on as Actors’ Equity Association has launched a national campaign to create two new categories at the Tony Awards, Best Chorus in a Play or Musical and Best Ensemble in a Play or Musical. The inclusion of these categories would recognize all Equity performers who appear on a Broadway stage.

    What do you think?

I don’t understand why you need a Best Ensemble (entire cast) and a Best Chorus (group that sings or dances). Doesn’t that mean that it’s entirely possible that a lot of people would get two Tonys for the same thing? This is why I don’t support a Tony for Best Song in addition to Best Score.

Just a Best Ensemble honoring the entire cast is fine.

Maybe the ensemble award would be given to the principal cast and the chorus award would be given to the non-principal cast.

The article says Ensemble is “defined as the entire cast”.

The Chorus could also get very squishy. It’s defined as “a group that sings or dances, or both”. Well, leads sing and dance too. So I think their categories are unclear.

If they must have two, then I think Ensemble of a Play and Ensemble of a Musical would be better, much like the SAG awards with Ensemble of a Comedy and Drama Series.

    I completely agree.

I don’t like this. It’s too many Tonys given around to too many people. It would make the awards less unique and unattainable.

No thank you. Not every job well done deserves a Tony award. These awards are supposed to be sort of rare. Maybe make it a special Tony award where an ensemble is so incredible and so essential to the success of the production and there are no principals that can be singled-out, and don’t give it out every single year just on special occasions.

I don’t get the whole best ensemble award. Often, there are weak links in an otherwise strong ensemble. People like that would get awards. For what? Or somebody doing just solid work but nothing exceptional? If there is an award honoring an ensemble, it’s for the casting director, not for the ensemble. So, I’d support a casting award, not an award for the ensemble members.
