I previously started a thread in the movie forums asking people “What Oscar prediction that came true are you most proud of? Which wrong prediction are you embarrassed about?” I thought it would be fun to ask a similar question regarding Tony Awards predictions. My responses are…

    Proud of:
Predicting Eclipsed to win Best Costume Design of a Play in 2016 over Long Day’s Journey Into Night.

Predicting The Humans to win Best Scenic Design of a Play in 2016 over Thérèse Raquin.

Predicting The Color Purple to win Best Musical Revival in 2016 over She Loves Me.

Predicting The Band’s Visit to win Best Book of a Musical in 2018 over Mean Girls.

Predicting Tony Shalhoub to win Best Lead Actor in a Musical for The Band’s Visit in 2018.

Predicting The Boys in the Band to win Best Play Revival in 2019.

    Embarrassed About:
Predicting Mark Strong to win Best Lead Actor in a Play for A View From the Bridge in 2016 instead of Frank Langella for The Father.

Not predicting The Play That Goes Wrong to win Best Scenic Design of a Play in 2017.

Switching away from Michael Aronov in Best Featured Actor in a Play for Oslo in 2017 to John Douglas Thompson for Jitney.

Switching away from Choir Boy in Best Sound Design of a Play in 2019 to The Ferryman.

Switching away from Ink in Best Lighting Design of a Play in 2019 to The Ferryman.

Now on to everyone reading this. What Tony prediction that came true are you most proud of? Which wrong prediction are you embarrassed about? I know Awardsfan1990 is likely gonna say he’s most proud of predicting SpongeBob SquarePants for Best Scenic Design of a Musical as well as Ali Stroker for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and most embarrassed about switching away from Bandstand in Best Choreography. Hopefully, he’ll have more examples of his own than just those.

    Other things I’m proud of:

Predicting Fun Home would win Best Musical over An American In Paris in 2015.

Predicting Hamilton would win Best Choreography over Shuffle Along in 2016.

Predicting The Band’s Visit would win Best Book Of A Musical over Mean Girls in 2018.

    Embarrassed by:

Predicting Kristin Chenoweth for On The Twentieth Century for Lead Actress In A Musical instead of Kelli O’Hara for The King And I in 2015.

Predicting Danny Burstein for Fiddler On The Roof for Lead Actor In A Musical instead of Leslie Odom, Jr. for Hamilton in 2016.

Predicting various other shows to win in the crafts categories instead of The Band’s Visit in 2018.

Predicting Oklahoma! for Best Orchestrations instead of Hadestown in 2019.

Now that we’re getting closer to the Tonys, I thought I’d give this thread a bump. Does anyone else have responses they’d like to share?

The most recent one I’m still kicking myself for is picking Oklahoma! over Hadestown for Orchestrations in 2019.

    Adding some for this year:

Glad I correctly predicted Simon Russell Beale and Deirdre O’Connell upsetting the lead acting races for plays. And correcting predicting the upsets in both sound design categories for “Dana H.” and “MJ.”

(Well…MJ wasn’t really an upset for sound. It was a frontrunner all season long, but Gold Derby users didn’t predict it for some reason).

Dana H. was one of my two superbets for it’s sound design.

    But I am mad at myself for not going with my gut intuition and switching to Phylicia Rashad, Myles Frost and Joaquina Kayukungo (Sp?) – I felt in my gut they would win so why didn’t I listen?? (I thought the experts must know something I don’t know!) (;

Super bet on Phylicia Rashad for “Skeleton Crew”! Love it! GD placed her way low in the odds at fourth place, which never felt right to me. I’m bragging about this prediction for years to come, BTW.

My only brag of this year is Phylicia Rashad, who I think I had in first ever since they announced that she was placed in the Featured category. In such a divided field, it made sense they would award her, and her reviews for that show were almost as good as anybody else’s from the whole season. I tried to convert  people, too!

Since we’re currently at the stage of people making early predictions, I thought I’d give this thread a bump. Are there any Tony predictions you made a year or months in advance that came true are you most proud of? Are there any wrong predictions are you embarrassed about?

I’ve mentioned before that I don’t like making early predictions because I prefer to wait and see how all the contenders shape up first. Although I actually do have examples from 2014.

    Proud of:
Predicting James Monroe Iglehart to win Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Aladdin. When it was announced that show was officially coming to Broadway, no casting was revealed at that point. Although I looked up audio clips on YouTube from the 2011 world premiere production in Seattle. By the time I got to ‘Friend Like Me,’ my immediate reaction was like “I hope Iglehart continues with the show to Broadway because if he does, he’s so winning the Tony.”

    Embarrassed by:
Predicting the four Best Musical nominees would be Aladdin, Big Fish, If/Then, and Rocky. In the end, I only got one of them right. I clearly should’ve waited to see how the other three would fare first.

As we’re now about three weeks away from this year’s nominations announcement, I thought I’d give this thread another bump. Which Tony nomination predictions that came true are you most proud of? Which wrong predictions are you embarrassed about? My responses are…

    Proud of:
Predicting Tony Yazbeck (On the Town) was sneaking into Best Lead Actor in a Musical in 2015. Meanwhile, I had Rob McClure (Honeymoon in Vegas) nabbing the fifth slot over Ken Watanabe (The King & I).

Predicting Blackbird was sneaking into Best Revival of a Play in 2016. I actually switched out Noises Off for that at the last minute. As fate would have it, they both got in.

Predicting Present Laughter was getting into Best Revival of a Play in 2017 over The Glass Menagerie.

Predicting Chris Cooper (A Doll’s House, Part Two) and Corey Hawkins (Six Degrees of Separation) were sneaking into Best Lead Actor in a Play in 2017 over Simon McBurney (The Encounter) and Mark Ruffalo (The Price). Meanwhile, I had Gideon Glick (Significant Other) nabbing the fifth slot over Denis Arndt (Heisenberg).

Going 5 for 5 on Best Featured Actor in a Play in 2017.

Going 4 for 5 on Best Direction of a Play in 2017. I had the fifth slot going to Kate Whoriskey (Sweat) instead of Sam Gold (A Doll’s House, Part Two).

Predicting Choir Boy was sneaking into Best Play in 2019 over Network.

Predicting Derrick Baskin (Ain’t Too Proud) was sneaking into Best Lead Actor in a Musical in 2019 over Will Chase (Kiss Me, Kate).

Predicting Jeremy Pope (Choir Boy) was sneaking into Best Lead Actor in a Play in 2019 over John Lithgow (Hillary & Clinton).

Predicting Ruth Wilson (King Lear) was sneaking into Best Featured Actress in a Play in 2019 over LaTanya Richardson Jackson (To Kill a Mockingbird).

Predicting Tootsie was sneaking into Best Choreography in 2019 over Oklahoma!.

Predicting MJ was overperforming in nominations. Which includes sneaking into Best Musical over Flying Over Sunset.

Going 5 for 7 for Best Lead Actor in a Play in 2022. Sam Rockwell (American Buffalo) and David Threlfall (Hangmen) were the two I didn’t predict.

    Embarrassed About:
Predicting Benjamin Walker (American Psycho) was nabbing the fifth slot for Best Lead Actor in a Musical in 2016 instead of Zachary Levi (She Loves Me).

Switching Christian Borle (Falsettos) out of Best Lead Actor in a Musical at the last minute in 2017 for Jon Jon Briones (Miss Saigon). I did the same thing with Eva Noblezada in her category and had Laura Osnes (Bandstand) getting in over her.

Predicting Corbin Bleu (Holiday Inn) was sneaking into Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 2017 over Andrew Rannells (Falsettos). Although I did at least call Brandon Uranowitz sneaking in.

Predicting James Lapine (Falsettos) was sneaking into Best Direction of a Musical in 2017 over Matthew Warchus (Groundhog Day).

Switching Jeanette Bayardelle (Girl From the North Country) out of Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 2022 for Jane Lynch (Funny Girl).

Predicting Michael Longhurst (Caroline, or Change) was getting in for Best Direction of a Musical in 2022 instead of Christopher Wheeldon (MJ).

Predicting Mark Brokaw (How I Learned to Drive) was getting in for Best Direction of a Play in 2022 instead of Camille A. Brown (for colored girls…)

Now that we’re about two weeks removed from the announcement, I thought I’d give this thread another bump. Which Tony nomination predictions from this year that came true are you most proud of? Which wrong predictions are you embarrassed about? My responses are…

    Proud of:
Predicting Cost of Living was sneaking into Best Play over Life of Pi.

Predicting Lorna Courtney was sneaking into Best Lead Actress in a Musical for & Juliet.

Predicting Jack O’Brien was sneaking into Best Direction of a Musical for Shucked.

Predicting Jamie Lloyd was sneaking into Best Direction of a Play for A Doll’s House.

Predicting KPOP was getting nominated for Best Original Score.

    Embarrassed About:
Switching New York, New York out of Best Musical and Best Book at the last minute and replacing it with A Beautiful Noise in both categories.

Switching Camelot out of Best Musical Revival at the last minute and replacing it with Dancin’.

Taking Katy Sullivan out of Best Featured Actress in a Play for Cost of Living at the last minute.
