MsMojo has recently debuted a video on the top 10 stage-to-screen musical adaptations of all time. For this list, they’re excluding proshot tapings of stage musical productions like Memphis, Newsies, and Hamilton. They’re only including actual feature films that were adapted from stage musicals.

If you want to know what’s in the list, you have two options. Either read their official rankings below or watch the video.

    The official rankings are…

    10. Dreamgirls (2006)
    9. Grease (1978)
    8. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
    7. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
    6. My Fair Lady (1964)
    5. Hairspray (2007)
    4. Cabaret (1972)
    3. Chicago (2002)
    2. West Side Story (1961)
    1. The Sound of Music (1965)

Honorable Mentions: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975); The Music Man (1962); Fiddler on the Roof (1971); Funny Girl (1968); Oliver! (1968)

Fiddler On The Roof should be in the top 10, not the honorable mentions.

I guess it was a matter of what the public at large (specifically those who voted on WatchMojo) were more likely to go for. You have some of the all-time classics to choose from like West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, and Cabaret; you have cult favorites to choose from like Grease and Little Shop of Horrors; and you have more modern favorites to choose from like Chicago, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, and Sweeney Todd. While Norman Jewison’s 1971 film adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof may not be as high profile on people’s lists regarding the all-time great movie musicals, I think it definitely deserves to be in that pantheon.

Having seen all the movies mentioned in this list, I’d say they all range from good to great. In fact, here’s how I would rank every single one of them myself (although they could change depending on how I feel about some of them after eventual repeat viewings):

    1. West Side Story
    2. Fiddler on the Roof
    3. Sweeney Todd
    4. The Sound of Music
    5. Cabaret
    6. Hairspray
    7. Little Shop of Horrors
    8. Chicago
    9. My Fair Lady
    10. Grease
    11. Oliver!
    12. Funny Girl
    13. The Music Man
    14. Dreamgirls
    15. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
