With Hamilton set to be released on Disney+ this Friday, Next Best Picture is asking readers which 21st century stage musical they would like to see adapted to film. The options they have listed are those that are not based on pre-existing movies nor have not yet received a film adaptation. Though some of the choices have announced plans for a movie, but just haven’t come to fruition (yet).

I’m surprised they didn’t include Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812 on the list. The story of War & Peace has resonated with the Academy before. The 1956 Hollywood adaptation starring Audrey Hepburn and Henry Fonda received 3 Oscar nominations, and the 1966 Russian adaptation won Best Foreign Language Film.

There’s a long list of stage musicals from the 21st century (so far). They couldn’t have possibly included every single one of them like Aida, The Light in the Piazza, Urinetown, etc. Though luckily, there is a write-in section for any title(s) that aren’t listed.
