Whitney Houston is the latest recording artist that’s set to receive a biographical stage musical for Broadway. Although this project in particular is supposed to be an adaptation of the upcoming biopic, I Wanna Dance with Somebody.

I’d definitely see this. Whoever is cast as Whitney Houston better do amazing renditions of her songs, particularly “I Will Always Love You” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me.”

I’m having a hard time getting around the fact that there was already a stage musical using the Whitney catalogue and it was a shitshow.

Plus, there’s hardly any way a biomusical of Whitney could be anything other than unbelievably depressing, given what happened to her when she achieved fame. I suppose you could do her earlier life and rise to fame and end with her triumphant “Star-Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, but that just seems to be a cheat. All this to say, I don’t think her life is suited to the bio-musical treatment.
