In my latest piece for Gold Derby, I’ve provided a poll asking people which veteran Broadway performer deserves the next Lifetime Achievement Tony Award. Among the options are…

    Alan Alda
    Julie Andrews
    Betty Buckley
    John Cullum
    Sandy Duncan
    Joel Grey
    George Hearn
    Estelle Parsons
    Leslie Uggams
    Ben Vereen

Who do you think deserves this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award? If you have ideas of your own, feel free to mention them in your replies to this thread.

For composers I would suggest Stephen Schwartz. For playwrights Tom Stoppard. For performers I would suggest Liza or Bernadette.

I actually do have a second poll focused on behind the scenes talent coming. Neither Schwartz nor Stoppard are included on it, but maybe next year.

I’m still surprised Bernadette Peters isn’t on the list. Of course it’s surprising she hasn’t gotten a lifetime achievement Tony yet.

Part of the reason why I didn’t list Bernadette is because I wanted to focus on those who haven’t received special Tonys yet. I don’t know if previous recipients of the Isabelle Stevenson Award can still eventually get a Lifetime Achievement prize. I guess maybe they could since the accolades themselves are very different.

I’ve now got a second poll up asking people which veteran Broadway creative deserves the next Lifetime Achievement Tony Award. Among the options are…

    Lynn Ahrens
    John Kander
    James Lapine
    Cameron Mackintosh
    Marsha Norman
    Jack O’Brien
    Ann Roth
    Julie Taymor
    Paula Vogel
    Jerry Zaks

One I forgot to mention…Andre de Shields. And don’t forget Stoppard or Schwartz.

Since Stoppard is currently a frontrunner to win Best Play this year, he might have to wait. There also probably needs to be some distance from Schwartz’s Isabelle Stevenson Award in 2015 and de Shields’ competitive win in 2019 before considering either of them.
