2002-John Lithgow, “Sweet Smell of Success”
2003-Harvey Fierstein, “Hairspray”

2005-Norbert Leo Butz, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”
2006-Bob Martin, “The Drowsy Chaperone”
2007-Raul Esparza, “Company” (I love David Hyde Pierce but this was not a contest)

2009-Brian D’Arcy James, “Shrek: The Musical”
2010-Douglas Hodge, “La Cage Aux Folles”
2011-Norbert Leo Butz, “Catch Me If You Can”

BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL:
2000-Heather Headley, “Aida” (though Mazzie and McDonald were close)
2001-Randy Graff, “A Class Act”
2002-Sutton Foster, “Thoroughly Modern Millie”
2003-Bernadette Peters, “Gypsy”
2004-Tonya Pinkins, “Caroline, Or Change” (this is an UNDERRATED performance)

2007-Christine Ebersole, “Grey Gardens” (same as Victoria Clark)

2010-Anyone BUT Catherine Zeta-Jones!!!! For now, I will choose Sherie Rene Scott, “Everyday Rapture”
2011-Sutton Foster, “Anything Goes” (she got her “Millie” spark back!!)

BEST FEATURED ACTOR IN A MUSICAL:
2000: Boyd Gaines, “Contact”

2002: Shuler Hensley, “Oklahoma!” (the best Jud Fry….definitive)
2003: Dick Latessa, “Hairspray” (kind of a weak list)
2004: This is tough, but Raul Esparza, “Taboo”
2005: Dan Fogler, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”

BEST FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL:
2000: Ann Hampton Calloway, “Swing!”
2001: Cady Huffman, “The Producers”
2002: Harriet Sansom Harris, “Thoroughly Modern Millie”
2003: Jane Krakowski, “Nine”
2004: Anika Noni Rose, “Caroline, Or Change” (I’m sorry but where was Ann Harada from “Avenue Q” or Stephanie J. Block from “The Boy From Oz?! If Ann Harada made it in, she would have had my vote!)
2005: This category is killer! Based on her facial expressions and goofy riffing and campiness, Sara Ramirez in “Spamalot” was comedic gold! (I still think the show didn’t deserve the Tony and was the weakest of the four)
2006: Beth Leavel, “The Drowsy Chaperone”
2007: Mary Louise Wilson, “Grey Gardens” (Orfeh was wonderful as well)
2008: Laura Benanti, “Gypsy”
2009: Karen Olivo, “West Side Story” (though had Susan Blackwell been nominated for “title of show”, she would have had my vote)
2010: Katie Finneran, “Promises, Promises”
2011: Nikki M. James, “The Book of Mormon” (though I do have to say that Benanti did an AMAZING job with the song “Model Behavior” in “Women on the Verge….” and LuPone gave one of her best performances ever singing “Invisible” in the same show)
Book, Score, and the plays to come later….

December 31, 2011 at 1:56 am #430529Slightly off topic. I just finished watching “Memphis” on Netflix. Granted, stage is meant to be seen on stage but I was immensely underwhelmed. I mean, I knew 2010 was a low year for original musicals but man alive, how’d that win? Even the finale (‘Steal Your Rock and Roll’) played better during the Tony broadcast. I kinda wished I didn’t watch it on Netflix and forked over rush tickets or something now. Whoever edited this film version did an godawful job.
Lesson learned.
Ummm, totally see why Chad Kimball had to bail due to his nervous system being shot if night in and night out he was playing Huey like this neurotic/ticky fella.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 31, 2011 at 11:13 am #430530Memphis is a pretty poorly written show. However, don’t kill me, but I had a great time haha. Granted, I saw it for free during it’s second preview. If I had dropped a hundred bucks for it I probably wouldn’t have the same opinion. The energy of the show isn’t captured in the recorded version, though. It’s much much more fun live. And I don’t know why they always do the finale when then perform on television or at events. There are other numbers that are much better.
It only won the Tony because 2010 was seriously one of the worst years Broadway had ever had. Awful.
And people have very strong opinions about Chad Kimball’s performance. Personally, I thought he was fantastic and created one of the most unique, interesting leading man characters I’ve ever seen in a new musical.

Chad Kimball’s accent was PAINFUL.. It was so overdone. I enjoyed Memphis quite a bit, I have no problem with it being nominated for the Tonys. Its the safe choice, think The King’s Speech, absolutely nothing revelatory with generic writing and (mostly) good acting. Fela!, even with its flaws of too much style over substance, was at least trying to bring something unique to Broadway that season.
