Glad to see Andor picking up guild support – SAG and DGA noms would have been extremely deserving too. Hope with this performance, Disney is convinced to still push it for Emmys even with Mando coming out.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2023 at 3:49 am #1205240791From what I see on @Deadline tweeter, it looks like Disney will campaign for both Andor and Obiwan Kenobi.
They released a promo video for Obi-Wan yesterday, as well as a banner, and today there’s a banner for Andor.

I don’t know if it’s eligible for other guilds but it’s sad. CDG and MUAHS for one should’ve jumped right into it.

Into the water, into the truth, in your reflection, he lives in you.January 13, 2023 at 4:42 am #1205240838Interesting that WGA panelled episodic category is the only one to nominate individual episodes from 6A only (“Rock and Hard Place” and “Point and Shoot”).
Everywhere else went 6B when given the opportunity (CSA different eligibility cycle and PGA; SAG and WGA main category don’t nominate episodes).

The growing support, get ready for Emmy nom #2.

In EIP’s defence, as someone who reads/subscribes to a lot of fashion and makeup, their marketing team is wonderful at promoting it and getting those creatives mainstream press, and the cast are on the case too. There is generally a good alignment of that vs who gets in here.
In theory (let’s take costumes), stuff like Abbott (the Halloween ep comes to mind, and Black-ish was an Emmy costumes contender, so they’re not anti network), Severance, and OMITB and Andor should be stronger here, but those things aren’t part of their campaign focus. Having cast that genuinely like fashion and costumes/makeup/whatever tends to help too (i.e Euphoria).

It will be there once the Film noms are out on January 25th.

Thanks!
PS – I try to keep things very positive when I post online, but I’m still not over the snubs Jessica Lee Gagne/Cinematography team has received here and at the Emmys. I thought the cinematography in Severance was absolutely brilliant, super challenging and very worthy of recognition. <rant over>

They do great work!
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2023 at 11:17 pm #1205242213It’s really struck me how much rejection of big heavy VFX pieces there is here. HoTD and TRoP overall underperformed, and there was a real rejection of anything comic adaptation or superhero. Andor’s notably practical compared to some of the alternatives, and Wednesday is the sort of more mid-budget thing that would typically be overrun by flashier alternatives in a lot of areas.
I think the VES / Visual effects noms here may be quite telling.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2023 at 6:28 am #1205247625Was looking at what had won drama series at WGA to try and inform my predictions more and it’s interesting to me how (with the exception of The Wire which wasn’t even noninated) almost every show that has won here since the category’s creation either has come off of winning a major Emmy or has been on its way to win one.
2005: Lost (won drama series and directing at the 2005 Emmys)
2006: The Sopranos (won drama writing at the 2006 Emmys)
2007: The Wire (not nominated for any Emmys)
2008: Mad Men (won drama seroes and writing at the 2009 Emmys)
2009: Mad Men (won drama series and writing at the 2010 Emmys)2010: Mad Men (won drama series at the 2011 Emmys)
2011: Breaking Bad (won drama s. actor at the 2012 Emmys)
2012: Breaking Bad (won drama series and s. actress at the 2013 Emmys)
2013: Breaking Bad (won drama series, actor, s. actor, s. actress and writing at the 2014 Emmys)
2014: True Detective (won drama directing at the 2014 Emmys)
2015: Mad Men (won drama actor at the 2015 Emmys)
2016: The Americans (won drama guest actress at the 2016 Emmys)
2017: The Handmaid’s Tale (won drama series, actress, s. actress, writing, directing and g. actress at the 2017 Emmys)
2018: The Americans (won drama actor and writing at the 2018 Emmys)
2019: Succession (won drama series, actor, writing, directing and g. actress at the 2020 Emmys)2020: The Crown (won drama series, actor, actress, s. actor, s. actress, writing, directing and g. actress at the 2021 Emmys)
2021: Succession (won drama series, s. actor, writing at the 2022 Emmys)It’s going to be interesting to see what wins here and seeing if it ends up foreshadowing anything at the Emmys seeing as one of the nominees is a completely new show that seems to be quite untested, three are coming off of zero major wins from the previous Emmy cycle (with one of them having never won an Emmy in the 6 seasons it has been on air) and the other nominee being a show that whilst coming off a clean Emmy sweep has been under-performing to the extent that it didn’t get in at PGA.

January 16, 2023 at 6:47 am #1205247635I think one of the things I’m struggling with at the moment with the TV awards is that a lack of agreement plus feeling like everything is drowned out by the film side has made me feel like it’s hard to get a heat check on different shows and what is and isn’t working for industry, not just critics. There’so much noise amongst the signal.
