Was looking at what had won drama series at WGA to try and inform my predictions more and it’s interesting to me how (with the exception of The Wire which wasn’t even noninated) almost every show that has won here since the category’s creation either has come off of winning a major Emmy or has been on its way to win one.

The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);

January 18, 2023 at 9:35 am #1205250739Fleishman is in Trouble is making gains. I posted a bit about it on the drama thread but The Crown here really has caught me off guard seeing how mixed the reception to this season has been and the fact they’ve never even nominated the show before (💀).
Usually the nominees here tend to be critical darlings (like Alias Grace) or shows that have strong industry pedigree/recognition so Tokyo Vice and Under the Banner of Heaven being here doesn’t surprise me seeing how revered Rogers and Black are (and how respected and renowned the source material of the latter is) but Slow Horses being here is quite something seeing as whilst acclaimed it doesn’t really fit into either category. I’m curious to see how BAFTA take to it.

Do you think the comedy categories will be all Abbott? What about new series?
I feel like predicting a Better Call Saul in drama series and Severance in episodic drama, especially since Better Call Saul has a vote split there.
Thoughts?

are there any notable snubs besides House of the Dragon? because I can’t really think of any other shows that could’ve gotten this but didn’t

I had completely forgotten House of the Dragon was eligible! That feels like a major snub.
Pam and Tommy and Inventing Anna were both also eligible as were both Five Days at Memorial and George and Tammy when it comes to the biographical limited series. The Boys, Interview with the Vampire, The Rings of Power, The Old Man and Wednesday were all also eligible as were Peacemaker and all the Marvel series.

January 19, 2023 at 1:38 pm #1205254137From this Emmy cycle, I think Black Bird, This Is Going to Hurt and Welcome to Chippendales were eligible for USC as well. Heartstopper, Pachinko, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey from the last Emmy cycle too.
