I haven’t found a thread for this. 2021 was the first year Spirit Awards rewarded television. What are your predictions for 2022?

    FYI: 2020 Winners
Best New Scripted Series: I May Destroy You
Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series: Immigration Nation
Best Male Performance in a Scripted Series: Amit Rahav – Unorthodox
Best Female Performance in a Scripted Series: Shira Haas – Unorthodox
Best Ensemble Cast in a Scripted Series: I May Destroy You

We can never accurately predict awards like these. They can go in any direction.

I can’t remember if there’s a budget restriction or it’s linked to a production company?

One show (if it’s the former) I would probably suggest seems reasonable here is Reservation Dogs.

Anything can be submitted / nominated as long it’s aired in the US & fits in with their aesthetic. I’m not even kidding, their president said everything’s judged based on a smell test. (per variety)

Ultimately, with no budgetary cap (unlike the $22.5 million limit in film), and with most TV projects coming from major networks and studios, Film Independent president John Walsh told me at the time that it would come down to a “smell test”: “aesthetic, original provocative subject matter, unique voice and diversity. The types of work that we celebrate on the film side, and TV side, they’re going to look very similar. … Somehow these singular voices are finding their way into television and making a mark on the culture. We are remiss if we don’t celebrate that.”

If there’s a through line with the 2021 noms, it’s that all five projects tell uniquely personal stories: “I May Destroy You,” about sexual assault and trauma; “A Teacher,” about exploitation, grooming and abuse; “Small Axe,” stories about West Indian immigrants in 1960s to 1980s London; “Little America,” stories about the immigrant experience in the United States; and “Unorthodox,” about a young woman fleeing her strict Hasidic Jewish community.

But here’s another similarity: The fact that all five nominees come from streaming services (give FX an asterisk, but “A Teacher” launched on its Hulu streaming portal) is telling. These are multi-billion dollar corporations, not scrappy little indie distributors. But premium cable and streamers — free of the need to satisfy advertiser demands for the broadest audience possible — have long been able to run smaller, more narrow and targeted projects that are also some of TV’s most original, and yes, “indie”-minded fare.

They nominated ZeroZeroZero and Work in Progress, so they’ll probably nominate a few under the radar shows. The hardest part to predict Spirit is that we have to guess which shows “feel” indie.

Reservation Dogs, Flatbush Misdemeanors, Blindspotting will probably be nominated, however I have no idea what would be the other nominations. Maybe The Underground Railroad and We Are Lady Parts?

Just to be sure, only performances in new shows are eligible, right?

I haven’t seen Lupin, but does Omar Sy have a shot here or is it too mainstream? (They nominated ZeroZeroZero, so they may nominate international series.)

What about Schmigadoon? It does feel very “so, me and my musical theatre friends decided to make a quarantine show”

Your right, I thought it was a weekly drop beginning in December for some reason.

If the first spirit awards for television can give a hint, I think they’re not going to be so mainstream as the Gothams. The most famous actor (and the only one that is known by a wider audience, I think) was Elle Fanning, and that’s the only reason why I think Cephas Jones may be snubbed here too. They even snubbed Kate Mara and John Boyega/Letitia Wright when their shows were nominated for series.

They also went with younger actors, with Abby McEnany being the exception. But “Work In Progress” was her first television project – it’s the same case for Seamon and Ramakrishnan.

Unless they change a lot from the first year to this one, I’m gonna go with this trend. Predictions below in order of likelihood:

    Best New Scripted Series
    1. Reservation Dogs
    2. The Underground Railroad
    3. Blindspotting
    4. We Are Lady Parts
    5. Run The World

Best Male Performance in a Scripted Series
    1. Omari Douglas – It’s A Sin
    2. Chase W. Willon – The Underground Railroad
    3. Kevin Iso – Flatbush Misdemeanors
    4. Dan Perlman – Flatbush Misdemeanors
    5. Michael Greyeyes – Rutherford Falls

Spoilers: Benjamin Earl Turner – Blindspotting; Olly Alexander – It’s a Sin; Stephen Amell – Heels; D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (if Reservation Dogs doesn’t win ensemble cast)

If they decide that he’s eligible: Kwame Patterson – David Makes Man

Best Female Performance in a Scripted Series
    1. Thuso Mbedu – The Underground Railroad
    2. Anjana Vasan – We Are Lady Parts
    3. Maahra Hill – Delilah
    4. Rose Matafeo – Starstruck
    5. Jasmine Cephas Jones – Blindspotting

Spoilers: Lydia West – It’s A Sin; Mychal-Bella Bowman/Sheila Atim – The Underground Railroad; Devery Jacobs (if Reservation Dogs doesn’t win ensemble cast); Any of the four leads – Run The World; Alexandra Daddario – The White Lotus (the closest to a Elle Fanning situation, I think)

Best Ensemble Cast in a Scripted Series: Reservation Dogs
