Also, that’s Cillian’s first BAFTA nomination since Rising Star I think?
that’s outrageous. Joe cole with a prior nomination and Cillian with none is mind blowing.

This was far from the best season too, Season 4 was levels aboveMarch 22, 2023 at 4:46 am #1205359502The lead categories and the comedy performance categories are VERY white. Surely they could have found more than just one worthy person of colour for each of them when there were like a dozen spots in total?

March 22, 2023 at 4:55 am #1205359516It’s interesting how much more mainstream the above the line categories are this year. Last year, with the exceptions of Winslet and Macfadyen (both of whom obviously had very jury friendly performances) and two supporting performances from genre shows, the jury largely ignored performances from the American series that suddenly became eligible. There was no Ted Lasso, no Brian Cox, no What We Do in the Shadows actors etc. But this year they seem to have gone in almost the opposite direction. With the exception of comedy female, every acting category has at least one performer who was in an American series this year. What’s even more interesting is that in categories like leading actress they look a lot more mainstream themselves not only in comparison to last year but also the last few years in general. I don’t think there’s even been a category where Vicky McClure is the least well known person in it lmao. I guess in part this could be because the broadcasters have played a much better hand at the broadcaster saves game (I do think Taron Egerton, Fiona Shaw and Matt Berry were all additions in the jury round) but it also could just show them growing to accept this new rule that was forced on them and adapt to it.
The Crown‘s performance is rather interesting. It was always going to under-perform here because they drop shows that are its age with as mixed reviews as it for less and I guess how it landed isn’t too different from how I predicted it (a couple of crafts with it potentially getting a couple of acting nods, one of which being for Salim Daw) but I guess it is where it has landed that is much more interesting to me. It has only ever been nominated once in editing at BAFTA (for season 2) and with Celia Haining credit for the nomination it seems like they’re either up for “The System” or “Couple 31” which would be quite significant if the latter seeing as it was what also landed the show its first scripter nod a couple of months ago two. Netflix should take notice. Staunton getting in was I guess surprising after they snubbed Colman but she’s also seen much more as a character actor than a TV star (like say Emily Watson) over here and they noninated Menzies for playing Phillip after Phillip died so it was always really on the cards. I guess what’s more interesting here is that seeing how the show performed overall I imagine she got through to the jury via the membership as opposed to Netflix and I do wonder how many other actors from the show made it through from the membership. I imagine Debicki and West would have been snubbed either way (as deserving as they both were) but I wonder if the only reason Manville has become the first actress to not get nominated for playing Margaret is because she’s also competing in supporting for Sherwood and double nominations in one category are banned. I thank god Jonathan Pryce was snubbed.
Slow Horses and Bad Sisters both landed well here but they also seem to have skid off in places too. The former in particular felt like it should have been a shoo-in for a series nod because of how much the jury favours “fresher” shows but then drama series was also ultra competitive this year. Likewise their writing omissions feel a bit shocking although I don’t know if I can take that category seriously this year when they nominated Heartstopper LOL. They both did still perform very well (and Bad Sisters has had a much better below the line performance than a lot of dramas tend to do) but I guess I expected more from them. Happy for Queen Anne-Marie Duff nonetheless!
I can deal with Blunt missing out (even though she gave the 2nd best performance of the year) because her category is full of incredibly deserving performances and acting titans (yay for Sarah Lancashire finally getting recognition for Julia!) but The English missing mini-series is just ridiculous. They didn’t nominate A Very British Scandal for mini-series last year in spite of getting rave reviews because it was too Christmas-y and now they’ve decided to recognised a mixed received ITV Christmas period drama? I mean come on. Elated for Chaske Spencer nonetheless.
International Series is filled with quite a few jaw-droppers this year but Dahmer‘s inclusion just takes the cake because… how??? I’m not even speaking out of personal revile, it just doesn’t make sense as a nominee here with this system at all. Wednesday is also quite shocking seeing as it isn’t really anything more than a blockbuster teen drama and is going to leave me scrambling with my comedy predictions at the Emmys a bit seeing as BAFTA actually have near perfect match-up with the Emmys in terms of nominees in this category going on to get something there (although I guess I’ve already acknowledged that with predicting Wednesday below the line). They always nominate a Sky/HBO drama so it’s a testament for how strong The White Lotus is that they went for it instead of Euphoria or House of the Dragon because they rarely nominate a continuing show if it hasn’t already gotten in before (as Ted Lasso, Schitt’s Creek, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ozark and Veep can all attest to). Severance missing is a bit surprising seeing how jury friendly it is but I presume that’s due to it not making it to the jury as opposed to them rejecting it. Interesting that even with three unscripted shows making the cut for the long-list this year none got nominated.
Glad I called them pulling the switcharoo on the Hullraisers performers. Cillian Murphy and Siobhan McSweeney are cute final season nominations! And thank goodness I read Piper’s name first out of all the nominees because I don’t think I would have been able to cope otherwise after seeing I Hate Suzie Too miss drama series.
Edit: Forgot to add Ambika Mod missing out is absolutely dumbfounding and ridiculous not only because she was so deserving (it’s an absolutely shameful snub) but because if you asked me yesterday I’d have thought she’d be the last person to get snubbed!

March 22, 2023 at 5:09 am #1205359539For some reason I brushed off Severance as 2021 mentally so some of those International Series are wow.

Considering almost nobody really cared for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the success of Wednesday proves how much of a gamechanger marketing is. Netflix basically billed it as a Tim Burton directed show rather than a teen drama.

Is this a first? All four drama writers on the #Bafta shortlist are first-time nominees – 3 of them with their first TV credit: Tony Schumacher (Responder), Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy), Alice Oseman (Heartstopper) and Adam Kay (This Is Going To Hurt)

March 22, 2023 at 6:33 am #1205359591The Ambika Mod snub is outrageous, and one I’m genuinely upset by! Her performance was not only one of the most astounding I’ve ever seen, but you have to think a Bafta nomination would be huge for her career. I always feared a snub was on the cards (given Bafta’s deserved reputation) but I’m so livid

March 22, 2023 at 6:44 am #1205359604In UK legislation, age and sex are two of nine ‘protected characteristics’ so yes an older white woman would be classified as a diverse voice. An older white woman would not be taking the place on a jury of any person of colour.
Also there’s far more than ethnicity in diversity so I wish outlets would focus on wider demographics like sexual orientation and disability with such vigour.
There are great performances from LGBT+ actors who have been nominated but almost written off because they’re white.
There’s also been snubs for actors with disabilities given Then Barbra Met Alan was shut out in particular, but the focus seems to be on race. Lenny Rush, a young actor with dwarfism, is in though and his nomination should be celebrated.
There are diverse nominees. It just isn’t as visible.
Also aside from Ambika Mod I’m not seeing many genuine ‘X was snubbed and should be in’. By all means say it doesn’t look right that it appears like a ‘one non-white face tick box’ but I’m not hearing names of people who should be nominated instead? People seem to love the Actor and Actress categories in particular.

March 22, 2023 at 6:46 am #1205359606These nominations just highlights the favouritism still rampant in this lot. Will Sharpe being the only nominee from that show with that performance is hysterical. Chaske Spencer is inspired but his nomination without Emily Blunt makes no sense especially since their show did quite well. I’m guessing they didn’t watch it and he was their diversity pick. In the actress lineup we have multiple returning nominees for similar work they’ve done before yet Blunt is still waiting for a TV nod for that role. Never thought I’d say the Emmys will do a better job…
The others weren’t eligible tho. Only him and Theo James were eligible, since they’re british.

March 22, 2023 at 7:09 am #1205359627I think it’s still early to say Manville will be the first Margaret actress to not be nominated for The Crown, there’s still one more season anw 🤷♂️
And the BAFTAs LOVE Manville.
