Supporting Actress 1. Saffron Hocking 2. Lesley Manville 3. Adelayo Adedayo 4. Jasmine Jobson 5. Fiona Shaw 6. Anne-Marie Duff
I find this ranking interesting for the sole reason that whilst we both are predicting the same winner we both have two performers, Manville and Duff, very much in flipped positions. I presume it is for very similar reasons to why I have Manville last and Duff fourth but I was just wondering if you could explain your thinking there?

March 22, 2023 at 9:00 pm #1205360659oh so their movie winners were diverse.
Cate Blanchett, Kerry Condon, Edward Berger, Martin McDonagh, Catherine Martin, etc championing the poor 40+ year old white people who deserve to have a voice!

I mean as always it’s a category where who tf knows what’s really gonna happen. But I guess my thinking was that Duff is the one in the category who doesn’t really fit the trend of recent winners where it’s either been a veteran or a newcomer. And obviously these trends are just circumstantial because it’s a different jury each time but I still think they show us something about the general taste of these voters. Duff could even count as a veteran but I just don’t think she is perceived that way. Nor do I think she is considered someone who there is any urgency to award which is another factor I am considering this year. Not in the sense of “overdue” but more that I’d say it’s rare that we see a winner in any category where it’s surprising that *they* (not their performance) were awarded.
Manville to me makes more sense as someone who has been gathering in steam and is more likely to be in the back of voters minds as a prolific presence. Obviously this is both a blessing and a curse but I think being in a simple British hit tv show like Sherwood could swing things her way. I also think that she has such an obvious submission with the first episode that is also a style of performance I think a jury will appreciate.
I’d actually have Fiona Shaw last if I’d seen her performance but the mystery keeps her fifth. I do think a jury will know she won for Killing Eve though and that this is the follow up role to her success from that rather than a new career peak.
Ultimately though, as we both agreed, it’s likely going to be the fresher faced Saffron Hocking. I think a jury will be more excited by the thought of going for her and her show than anyone else which is probably enough to just take it.

March 28, 2023 at 9:28 pm #1205367625Interesting picture from the RTS overall (it was nice seeing Winslet come to collect her award in person)! As has already been mentioned before they do like spreading the wealth so Winslet winning for I Am Ruth whilst Prebble finally bagged a writing award for I Hate Suzie Too isn’t really anything too shocking but maybe it might indicate the leading actress race being much closer than we think it is?
None of the other wins there feel particularly shattering (Derry Girls and Sherwood feel like the type of critically raved audience hits that they tend to jump to award and Am I Being Unreasonable? feels like the type of esoteric dramedy they tend to favour in giving acting awards to in a way the BAFTA jury haven’t really shown themselves to neccessarily though). I am glad for prognosticating purposes that Mood won here though, especially seeing as although it wasn’t facing This is Going to Hurt and The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe here it was still facing stiff competition nonetheless. You can never be too confident about predicting a TV BAFTA but it makes me feel happier about mulling it for an upset in mini series.
Also, as strange as it may be to say this about someone who is already so decorated, it’s so satisfying to see Lancashire getting a career achievement award.

March 29, 2023 at 12:27 am #1205367692I’m delighted by the increased representation that will hopefully come from Lenny Rush getting the attention he currently is but I have to say I don’t get what people are seeing in the performance. Like he was fine but it didn’t occur to me for one second that he was going to get nominated let alone win anything for it. Just another child actor with some good lines, nothing more. It should guarantee him a career though if he wants one which is great news.

He’s a scene stealer in Am I Being Unreasonable?!
If they split Comedy Acting into Lead and Supporting, then I think Rush would be taking Supporting easily.

I didn’t see it! Like he was funny because kids saying mature things is generally funny but I wouldn’t say there was much range or anything particularly. Like in my mind I see no difference between his performance and the girl who plays Phoebe in Ted Lasso. Both are great in roles that ultimately don’t require a lot. Even the arc he had with the cat was led by the writing more than the performance.
That said, I am comforted by the fact that you actually thought he was a scene stealer.
