Any chance of The English making a splash here? Sorry if I’ve asked before I’m on the 🍷

If it’s getting in anywhere, it’ll be at the BAFTAs tbf.

Blunt stands a chance of a nod and a Miniseries nod too. Plus a slew of techs.

What I’m most curious about here is what ends up being our nominations leader this year. Every year it has more or less felt obvious but this year all the super acclaimed stuff that feel likely to win ATL BAFTAs all feel like they’re not flashy enough to do well BTL (Sherwood, This is Going to Hurt, I Hate Suzie Too) whilst the big period productions don’t feel acclaimed enough to do well ATL (The Crown).

I guess The English fits into both categories but it also feels more like Patrick Melrose/Landscapers than Small Axe. I think it will get around to 7 to 8 nods on its best day (would of course be a pleasant surprise if it gets more.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

What or who is most likely in comedy here?  I feel like I’ve missed things/we haven’t gotten the rights to stuff (you can also probably count the eligible Brits in the SAG list on one hand)

Big Boys is almost certainly getting nominated and Derry Girls probably will get in somewhere too. There’s Ellie and Natasia too which could get an acting nod or two like Famalam did.

Outside of that it does feel a bit like a wide open field. All the other shows feel like well seen but not neccessarily the most acclaimed offerings (Here We Go), less well received but still decent seasons of previous nominees (Starstruck, Ghosts) or the really quirky niche stuff that was well received but not particularly well seen even on a critical standpoint (The Baby, The Curse).

It’ll be interesting to see if the Motherland Christmas special makes a splash.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Binged it on NYE, and as someone who wasn’t a lover of series 1, I have to say it was great. Piper excels and would be a worthy BAFTA winner

Maxine Peake may edge it still for me at the moment though.

What helps Piper is that (whilst they are different juries of course) there’s been a recent trend of lead acting winners also being in series winners (Bean, Coel, Harris, Cumberbatch, Comer for Killing Eve, Windsor etc) so the sheer love for I Hate Suzie Too could propel her to the finish line (I think the show is probably a more likely drama series winner than say Anne is in mini series). There’s also precedence for a win like this in Sarah Lancashire’s win for Happy Valley season 2. Just like Lancashire, Piper’s performance is an actors showcase to the extent that she can be win competitive with any tape she sends and just like Lancashire for the first season of Happy Valley she lost to a performance that was just as much at the centre of their show as hers was. I guess the only difference here is that Lancashire’s competition was weaker than Piper’s will probably be (whilst I haven’t seen NW, I doubt Comer and Foy would have been able to do any better in another field than they did in that one even though they deserved to).

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I just noticed something exciting when surfing IMDB.

It feels like something probably do well below the line like The Pursuit of Love and A Very British Scandal last year. Not sure whether the juries at the main ceremony will take to it though when they have several baitier and more acclaimed options to choose from.

Not too familiar with BAFTA rules so question for those who are. How is Bad Sisters eligible? Are the BAFTA awards for both British and Irish productions?
