I’m shocked that they snubbed This is Going to Hurt and Whishaw. I was expecting the show to hit a stumbling block after what happened to It’s a Sin and We Are Lady Parts last year but I thought RTS would jump to nominate it outside of Mod. Shouldn’t hurt its BAFTA chances too much (I’d be surprised if either were snubbed) but interesting nonetheless.

Also interesting that this is the second time now that we’ve seen Sharon Horgan get in for writing for Bad Sisters but the show fail to get anything else.

Above all though, I’m so happy for Billie!! She’s in good company in that category too (enough for me to ignore the fact they didn’t nominate Blunt at least 😉).

They spread the wealth a lot so makes it difficult to say what is actually ahead. Shows that got nothing here are the only ones that should be worried

Oh definitely. I do think for example that these aren’t worrisome misses for Peake and Blunt seeing their co-stars made it in. But I was still shocked by This is Going to Hurt’s haul nonetheless.

I Hate Suzie Too getting three nominations is very good for it I think. Especially seeing as they didn’t even nominate Piper in a just as competitive category for season 1.

I love a lot of the RTS nominations especially the likes of Adelayo Adedayo, Jon Pointing, Lenny Rush and Stephen Walters.

I still expect Whishaw and Peake to be nominated at BAFTA though I really hope Martin Freeman makes it too!

    JON POINTING woo

Really hope he wins BAFTA. One of my favourite performances of the year.

RTS nominated Winslet but expecting the BAFTAs to pull off a reverse Catriona Balfe and instead nominate Mia Threapleton. Both are Leading and Winslet is going to be the big BAFTA snub.

I reckon Threapleton will be submitted and nommed in Supporting

(Agree though that a Winslet snub whilst her co star is nommed would be very on brand. Expecting similar for Blunt and Spencer and could even see it happening with The Crown cast)

Does TV BAFTA allow double acting nominations in a single category? They have always nominated the Margaret actress but Lesley also has Sherwood, so I’m not sure whats her situation.

Lesley Manville being the only actor nominated for The Crown (and a double nominee with her being moved up to lead for Sherwood like Stephen Graham was shafted to supporting for Time last year) would be a classic BAFTA move. As would the show getting completely shut out above the line.

I do think though that leading actress is probably going to be the category either the most snubs. Aside from Piper I wouldn’t be shocked to see anyone contending in that category miss frankly. It’s just so stacked. Even beyond the shows and performances that have made it in at RTS and the BPG this past week I wouldn’t be surprised to see the jury randomly throwing a bone to Staunton (although I wouldn’t predict such a thing) or them going for people like Ashley, D’Arcy or even James from the American series. It will actually be quite interesting to see how the Brits in American shows perform this year. Last year you could argue Waddingham, Temple, Goldstein and Cox were predictable misses because their categories were too competitive (and because they’d been showered with awards stateside and Ted Lasso is much more of a populist hit than a critical favourite). I don’t know if that’s neccessarily the case this year and with House of the Dragon, Bridgerton, Andor etc all being shows with an ensemble comprised of breakout actors and under-appreciated character actors I can see there being appeal. The colder acting styles on House of the Dragon and Andor in particular feel like the exact type that these juries would jump to nominate.

I wasn’t expecting the RTS to throw a bone to Winslet for I Am Ruth not because of her profile but because of how competitive the field was. Of course the RTS didn’t have the opportunity that BAFTA did last year for Mare to nominate her so I can see the jury still ignoring her thinking they’ve aptly awarded her but her performance is arguably baitier than her turn in Mare of Easttown so perhaps she could just be too good to ignore. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Threapelton get in and her miss though not just because of the juries favouring newcomers and underdogs over their highly regarded stars but also because we have precedence with the I Am series of there being a switcharoo at BAFTA with Samantha Morton getting in for the first series after Vicky McClure had made it in at the other British TV awards.

The English is an interesting one because whilst I expect the jury to take to it well I think it reminds me a lot of Landscapers last year in that it is respected a lot more than it is loved. I can see it kind of repeating a similar haul where it dominates the below the line technical categories and gets the series nod (but doesn’t win) and its male lead gets in whilst its A list female lead is snubbed. Although I think what does help Blunt is that unlike Colman she hasn’t really been recognised by awards bodies so much and like Winslet last year she hasn’t ever been recognised for TV (a medium she’s rarely been in over the past 15 to 20 years even though that is where she started off). Likewise, it wouldn’t surprise me to see both Blunt and Spencer snubbed and Rafe Spall be the only actor from the show to get in (if he does get in, I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see him win).

Nightmare scenario: Stephen Rea, as the only actor to have gotten BAFTA nominations for Hugo Blick’s shows so far, is the only actor nominated again.

I’m actually not very hopeful about Emily getting in for the reason you’ve already given, but I really need Chaske to pull through.

Haha I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see him make the cut either. The juries can be weird like that.

I do think The Honourable Woman and Black Earth Rising would have done better in acting nominations if they were competing under this current system. Back then it would just be that the performances that were top 6 with the membership round of voting would go through to the jury round and then 4 would be picked. Nowadays it’s more of a hybrid system with the top 6 and then each of the broadcasters putting forward two saves (one of which has to be a performer who fits one of the protected characteristics) in each caregory. In the case of Michaela Coel for Black Earth Rising in particular I think she just suffered from the bad luck of coming in the year of the first seasons of Killing Eve and Bodyguard and when Ruth Wilson gave her most down to earth performances yet in one of the most acclaimed shows she’s ever starred in.

Chaske Spencer should absolutely make the cut just based on his performance alone although the jury can be very funny when it comes to recognising Amerocan actors (I think you can count as many of them who have been nominated with the palms of your hands and I don’t think any have ever won) so it wouldn’t surprise me to see him go either way here.

You’re making a good point about them hardly ever recognizing american actors in british shows. Ugh, I’m still crossing my fingers for at least him.

For reference this is (I believe) the list of Brits who are vaguely in contention for 2023 Emmys  (i.e May – Dec releases) that I’m pretty sure are BAFTA eligible (I pulled everyone with at least 50 predictions)

Obviously totally different voting systems and they will probably go for someone completely esoteric (I am still very “what” with BAFTA noms). Would love some opinions on most likely.

Also I’m not a Brit and I have absolutely missed someone just really good at doing an American accent.

Drama– Emma D’Arcy, Sharon Horgan, Helen Mirren, Kelly Reilly, Paddy Considine, Dominic West, Olivia Cooke, Lesley Manville, Matt Smith, Jonathan Pryce, Tom Hollander, Theo James, Will Sharpe

Limited– Emily Blunt, Taron Egerton, Ben Whishaw, Domhnall Gleeson, Ciaran Hinds, Ewan McGregor.

    Comedy– Natasia Demetriou, Gwendoline Christie
