I have the utmost respect for Matthew Macfadyen and his performance on Succession but him having 2 BAFTAs and his wife having 0 is… a crime.
Absolutely, Hawes is the top talent in the household and I suspect even he must find it a little embarrassing at times. How she never won at least a BAFTA for her performance when Line of Duty was at its highest peak in terms of quality I will never know. Both her and Vicky McClure were snubbed that year.

The club of renowned British actresses still waiting for a first BAFTA win (from this century) are:
Alison Steadman, Andrea Riseborough, Anna Friel, Anne Reid, Billie Piper, Claire Foy, Geraldine James, Juliet Stevenson, Keeley Hawes, Lesley Sharp, Lindsay Duncan, Maxine Peake (hopefully this is her year!), Nicola Walker, Romola Garai, Samantha Morton (technically won one for producing the drama The Unloved but no acting win), Sheila Hancock, Siobhan Finneran and Sophie Okonedo.

I’m surprised Peake’s never won one though! She’s somehow simultaneously one of our most highly regarded actors as she is one of the most underrated.

I’ve not seen The Village or Hancock & Joan so can’t comment on how good her roles were though she has the performance to win this year. However, Billie did blow me away in I Hate Suzie Too especially that final episode.

A strong list for sure. Missing Anne-Marie Duff though with 4 noms and no wins. Shameless would never have seen the initial success and spread to the US without Anne-Marie!
ReplyCopy URLMarch 20, 2023 at 12:53 am #1205357557To be fair I can understand why they went with Time over It’s a Sin in series and actor (it’s basically like if you went with Feud over Big Little Lies, a surprising choice but nonetheless not an undeserving one by any means either) but not even nominating Hawes last year was absolutely ridiculous. The critics agreed she gave one of the best performances of the year and the show’s audience agreed so why should Hawes being a big TV star be a barrier here? I have the utmost respect for Matthew Macfadyen and his performance on Succession but him having 2 BAFTAs and his wife having 0 is… a crime.
the disrespect towards Keeley last year… nominating the entire cast and not the actual best performance of the show that actually deserved to win. The fact they didn’t even attend the ceremony…they knew.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 20, 2023 at 12:54 am #1205357559I just assumed Keeley Hawes already had a BAFTA. WTF? Why doesn’t she?
they don’t deserve her. Everytime she had the chance to win bafta added extra new rules that robbed her like last year when british actors from international shows started to be eligible or in 2019 when Killing Eve a show aired before in USA was eligible.

I wanted to mention Anne-Marie until I saw she won a Welsh BAFTA for The History of Mr Polly. I know it probably doesn’t have as much prestige as as a regular one, but a BAFTA is a BAFTA lol.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 20, 2023 at 6:07 am #1205357671At least I can understand with Line of Duty (even though that was arguably her best performance) because she was competing in what was probably the most competitive BAFTA TV best actress field of all time and I don’t think she would have won for Bodyguard without the Killing Eve women there because of Ruth Wilson. But the It’s a Sin snub is just one of the worst in the history of BAFTA. It’s like they didn’t even acknowledge she was even in it.

I guess and she would have won the Welsh award regardless but it just feels like a consolation prize. She deserved better. I just feel that without her, Mcavoys and Peake’s performances we would never have seen Macy, Allen White, Rossum, Fisher etc.

Agreed on It’s a Sin, I feel that the Line of Duty year should have gone to either Hawes or Lancashire which for me were stronger performances than Campbell’s. I think performance wise there was little to separate the two but Line of Duty at its peak felt like it had the country in a headlock lol. People everywhere at water coolers in offices were all discussing what is in essence a police procedural show which was incredible. I am still gutted to this day that the final ever episode at this time was so terrible haha

was it because of the character? Because can’t really understand how they snubbed a performance like that…I still get chills thinking about that hospital scene. By now she should have won for Line of Duty, Mrs Wilson and It’s A Sin…
ReplyCopy URLMarch 20, 2023 at 7:31 am #1205357742Georgina Campbell’s win is so underrated IMO (that drama FLOORED me) plus it was a historic moment for BAFTA (a’la Adeel Akhtar’s win in Best Actor).

I think she was very good yes but for me not at the level of the other two although personally I had her above Sheridan. She has made some terrible part choices since though in my opinion and I hope she gets back on track because you want someone who breaks through the glass ceiling to go on to even greater heights.
