Last year there was a thread like this and I discovered new great series so I decided to create it for this year.
I finished Nolly yesterday and loved it. Davies manages to make all the events very dynamic, plus HBC is great as the character. I also saw Stonehouse a while ago and didn’t find the plot very interesting, but Macfadyen and Hawes are pretty good.
I plan to watch Funny Woman and Extraordinary this month.

i found extraordinary the total opposite of it’s title, but i might be an outlier.

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 5, 2023 at 6:42 am #1205284871I haven’t finished it but I’ve been loving what I’ve seen of Nolly so far. I knew of the existence of Crossroads as this iconic soap opera but the show ended long before I was born so it was really interesting just in terms of TV history to learn about the whole Noelle Gordon incident and just how these soaps were made back in 1981. RTD really managed to take what I presume what many people would see as a really dated story and turn it into something gripping and relevant for a younger audience whilst also making it a lot of fun! I think part of the appeal of it is that whilst watching it you feel like a kid in a candy store. It’s baffling to me ITVX didn’t launch this as their flagship show when it’s a very clear and obvious choice but it’s nice to see that ITV is still willing to commission great dramas in the midst of their Durrells and Broadchurch knock offs. Helena Bonham Carter is just fantastic here and is doing some really layered character work. I’ve liked her a lot in things in the past (especially on The Crown and in films like Burton and Taylor, Fight Club and Howards End) but there’s always a sense I have with each of her performances where I’m aware I’m watching a Helena Bonham Carter performance whilst here you hardly even notice because of how developed Noelle is as a character. I thought at first that it was a rather strange writer/actor combination but I hope she becomes more of a continued collaborator with RTD like Neil Patrick Harris seemingly has after It’s a Sin.

February 5, 2023 at 6:49 am #1205284891Haven’t watched Nolly, but gosh how I loved Everyone Else Burns o Channel 4. Yes it is a bit of a “who’s who” of British comedy in its casting (Morgana Robinson, Lolly Adefope, Al from Stath Lets Flats who seems to be turning up in everything), and there were some things that didn’t quite work for me, but overall I liked how it portrayed this sort of community without completely ripping into religion. The pilot in particular was outstanding.
I remember a lot of people here raving around Kate O’Flynn’s performance in Landscapers, which was a show I just didn’t enjoy so it was hard to share that enthusiasm, but she plays a blinder in this and would be my pick for Supporting Comedy Actress in my own personal awards so far this year.
I’m also looking forward to The Gold.

This! I really loved it when in the first episode it shows how the actors’ week went with rehearsals and recordings. Bethany Antonio was adorable in this one. I also liked Larry Grayson in the second one in a scene with HBC where she is amazing.

February 6, 2023 at 4:12 pm #1205294895Oh yeah, this morning’s brilliant breaking TV news at a @skytv / @BPGPressGuild event is that a new, third series of Lennie James’s superb #SaveMe is in development.

February 7, 2023 at 12:47 pm #1205296294One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time is returning to TV more than four decades later. “Fawlty Towers,” the beloved British sitcom starring John Cleese, is getting a revival with the “Monty Python” star set to return. https://t.co/eUQgNTdbz9 pic.twitter.com/bwTPNf9P33

February 7, 2023 at 12:51 pm #1205296299Revolting news. Not only was the original comedy gold that should not be touched but I get the feeling that this revival is less because of a creative idea and more because of Cleese being obsessed with wanting to wage some sort of culture war.

February 7, 2023 at 2:00 pm #1205296424I watched Stonehouse today and while the plot was confusing and not that interesting, Matthew’s acting was off the charts, that scene on episode 2 with the interrogation is ACTING.
I might watch Nolly tomorrow.

It’s gonna be a tight year!
