My guess for Maisel is April after Daisy Jones is done? Season 5 has 9 episodes so they if they do two a week again then maybe the finale on its own they need 5 weeks
Where did you read that the final season has nine episodes? I’ve been wanting confirmation on the episode total for a while, so this is great news!
January 25, 2023 at 5:21 pm #1205267739Smart, Brunson, Applegate, and Brosnahan are 100% locks – I don’t see a world in which Brunson misses.
I think Smart and Brunson are locks. The others are very very likely, but they got in alone. I’d be surprised if they missed but shocked if Smart or Brunson did.

I only think it’s a possibility because when you evaluate the performance alone, Quinta Brunson is playing a character that is based on Quinta Brunson and written by Quinta Brunson.
Her writing is excellent though.

This never hurt or hindered Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Larry David (I am sure there are more examples those are just the first that popped into my head).

When they had the finale table read someone posted their script!
January 25, 2023 at 6:09 pm #1205267807Honestly I don’t think the removal of the unlimited ballot is going to change things as much as I think people are expecting it too. It will definitely have some impact (we’ll probably see less Max Minghella/Chris Sullivan type of coattail nominations and more Rhea Seehorn/Himesh Patel type of passion picks) but ultimately voters are going to vote for what they watch and like just as they have done since they’ve been able to vote for nominations. No one will obviously know what results a restricted ballot will bring in this mass TV era of television until we see the nominations come out of course but I feel like when changes tend to happen to the way people vote at the Emmys they never tend to have as much of a domino effect as say the arrival of new shows and the decline of older shows do. In 2017 when the Emmys switched over to the unlimited ballot a lot of passion picks who had developed a lot of momentum from the prior season like Maura Tierney and Constance Zimmer were dropped but Ann Dowd still made it into guest actress for a cult HBO show with no Emmy history and Alison Wright still made it in for The Americans in spite of the show being dropped from series. The rule change will level the playing field for some contenders who will now be able to break through as a result of it but it ultimately won’t bring change over night. The voting system (at least on paper) is probably going to be closer to what we’ve seen at SAG and the Globes than say the Oscars.
With regards to Brunson and Brosnahan, whilst I wouldn’t neccessarily call the latter a lock (purely because Maisel season 5 hasn’t even released a still yet), I think it’s clear at this point that there is a lot of industry love for both their performances. They both managed to get nominated at SAG this year without their more beloved veteran co-stars in spite of Maisel having its least well received season and Abbott being an ensemble driven show. They may not be strong contenders for the win (although I do think Quinta can be win competitive for the comedy actress Emmy this time round if Hacks continues the decline it has been having seeing she definitely seems to have a lot of support and she has been quite juicy material this season on Abbott) but that doesn’t neccessarily mean they don’t have their own loud bases of supporters. Both shows airing through to voting and Maisel being on its final season should help both of them.
Applegate is interesting because Dead to Me has kind of been flopping at the guilds (it has gotten nothing outside of her) compared to last time but there seems to be a strong desire to at least nominate her and she’s a very beloved and established thespian who could probably get in on either type of voting ballots (like Kaley Cuoco last year). I won’t call her a lock seeing as I think she’s starting off around the same place/if not lower than Brosnahan (and there’s no such thing as more than half a category being locked before voting even begins, unless you’re Frances Fisher) but her chances feel solid.
Ortega feels like someone who could go either way. The industry definitely seems to not be averse to recognising Wednesday but those SAG ensemble and PGA omissions feel glaring seeing how easily Bridgerton and Inventing Anna got them and the fact that whilst the show is a massive hit it does seem to have plateaued a bit in momentum and the Spring could really fill things up in a way they weren’t at the winter awards. I actually wouldn’t be shocked to see Tim Burton get into directing but Ortega miss (I currently am predicting both to get in) almost like how GLOW still got into directing but missed for Alison Brie.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Applegate
Brosnahan
Brunson
Fanning (if released in time)
Ortega
Smart (if released in time)If both Hacks and The Great miss then Cardellini and Lyonne (even then I feel it’s a long shot for Natasha since it’s peacock and it could be Girls5eva 2.0)
FYC:
The HBO darlings everywhere (The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Perry Mason, White House Plumbers, Love & Death);
The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);
Poker Face, The Great, The Bear, Evil (especially Katja Herbers) and The Good Fight.Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!
January 25, 2023 at 6:30 pm #1205267831Fanning (if released in time)
Hulu set premiere dates for The Great seasons 1 and 2 at both its TCAs in those years. I think it’s missing eligibility.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Your point is valid in terms of looking at it objectively… I think Brunson’s writing is stronger than her acting and she’s not the strongest actor on the show. BUT this show is continuing to have a moment and I don’t see that changing in the months to come. I just can’t see a world where Brunson or Jean Smart miss. I think Applegate and Brosnahan are slightly more vulnerable though I think both will get in too.

January 26, 2023 at 5:36 am #1205268252Wednesday finds itself in hot water as star Percy Hynes White is accused of sexual assault and neo-nazism. Netflix and Ortega have not yet denounced him as they have a flick coming out this summer.

I was going to say! The accusations against Percy are bigger than all of this and it’s somewhat harrowing how Netflix aren’t making a statement about it. I wonder whether they’re going to try and sweep it under the rug or will they potentially recast him? If they take no action and allow him to keep his job, that is incredibly deplorable and something that honestly shouldn’t be tolerated.

Dude seems like an idiot, but they almost certainly can’t comment on it because it’s not their place to. It’s not related to on-set (I don’t even think it happened in the US) and needs to be investigated appropriately not through the court of TikTok. They’ve commented on and removed someone from a Flanagan production pretty recently.

However they handle this, the already slim chances of Emmy glory from Wednesday are dead in the water.
