It is such a shame how Steve Martin and Martin Short seem to be splitting votes. One of them deserves to win.
January 31, 2023 at 3:15 pm #1205276582Is it just me that thinks Jenna could do an Alison Brie? Even though GLOW wasn’t the pop culture phenomenon that Wednesday is, I could see a similar trajectory for Jenna that Alison had (GG + SAG = Emmy snub).
FYC: Only Murders in the Building and The Handmaid’s Tale in all categories including Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Elisabeth Moss, and Yvonne Strahovski.

I don’t see it for that reason, Jenna Ortega IS Wednesday, while Alison Brie was part of a very full Ensemble show.
I do think however that Wednesday is kinda losing steam as we speak.FYC:
The HBO darlings everywhere (The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Perry Mason, Somebody Somewhere, White House Plumbers, Love & Death);
The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);
Poker Face, The Great, The Bear, Evil (especially Katja Herbers) and The Good Fight.Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!

I just can’t see the Television Academy taking Wednesday seriously. Personally, I couldn’t progress past episode two because it was too young for my tastes. I see it in the same category as Heartstopper – a different Netflix YA series which hit the numbers (and features Olivia Colman in quite a substantial capacity.)
Like Heartstopper, Wednesday would be more fruitful competing in the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.

Rachel Brosnahan literally got into a competitive SAG field this year whilst Borstein and Shalhoub were snubbed for Christina Applegate and Anthony Carrigan. They’re not making it in without her for the final season.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

That would be wonderful to see, I know that victory speech will be hilarious

Different voting bodies and Emmys have Supporting categories. Maisel missed Ensemble, so if we consider that only 1000 people votes for SAG noms, it can give the full picture that Maisel is losing steam, so I’m betting on Brosnahan being the one left out this time due to the category she is (maybe only if Fanning is eligible, though). I think Shalhoub and Borstein are too beloved to miss in a 8 nominees field. Same thing that happened with Kate McKinnon.

I will say that Wednesday is in a different league compared to Heartstopper. However, as Wednesday seems to be more of a YA show that could negatively impact its chances, especially since the voters seem to be attracted to shows that feature strong/explicit language – I think that Wednesday was a case of right place right time.

VEEP, Fleabag and Girls > … maybe this could help The Bear?

I mean it is but wouldn’t you if you were Disney+? She-Hulk is DOA.

Thought the exact same, but I guess Disney’s trying their luck considering they have three newly-minted Oscar nominees on deck.

I feel like the different voting bodies argument is a bit over-used when it comes to SAG’s influence on the television side. Last year people (including myself) used that argument to predict Jessica Chastain in spite of her SAG miss because Isaac was nominated there only for her to miss for Sarah Paulson. Several pundits used that argument to predict Selena Gomez to make it in over Elle Fanning in spite of the former getting blanked by the winter awards and the latter getting in everywhere including SAG. A couple of months ago people were using it to argue why Stranger Things and Yellowstone would still get in for SAG ensemble even though the former had just gotten shut out by the actors at the Emmys for two years in a row and the latter had just gotten shut out completely at the Emmys.
They’re different bodies but they ultimately use a similar voting system (something that is probably going to be exacerbated even more now with the Emmys returning to the restricted ballot) and both are ultimately watching the same shows and voting for the performers on them based on how they feel about them. There’s no doubt that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has lost steam (although it still got 11 Emmy nominations last year and was nominated by 7 different guilds this year for season 4, including DGA who nominated it over Only Murders in the Building season 2 even though the Emmys did the opposite when it was season 1 vs season 4) but the fact that SAG nominated Brosnahan without nominating Maisel for anything else (in a field that Gold Derby didn’t even predict her to get in because of how competitive it was) tells me that her performance is very beloved in the industry seeing as she hasn’t won anything since the show’s second season (whilst Shalhoub won at SAG the last time he was eligible before getting snubbed this year) and her show is in the mid to low tier in series.
I’d argue she’s actually the Kate McKinnon of the show rather than Borstein and Shalhoub seeing as she’s someone who the internet has moved over from and who hasn’t won anything in a while but still gives a performance that the industry and the casual viewers loves as well as the fact that she is the face of her show like McKinnon arguably had been of SNL ever since the 2016 election.
