Now that we have the prediction center, I’m going to replay that game. Based solely on the shows you’ve watched so far, who would you like to see nominated in each category?

7. Mark Proksch (What We Do in the Shadows)
8. Tyler James Williams (Abbott Elementary)February 2, 2023 at 5:22 pm #1205281595Does anyone really care enough about her performance to vote for it though? I love her but I feel like no one talked about her (at least relative to other actors in the ensemble of Wednesday) during the show’s run.
Facebook loves her, so I’d guess primarily older viewers. I don’t know, I might drop her later on, but her search levels are still very high for her. I’m comfortable with a 100/1 pick for someone being 8th instead of 12th. (I am going for Jimoh in supp actor, who I think is super likeable and could very well have a solid storyline)

Are we on the same page being ambivalent about Hacks? I’m more than happy with Jean but I don’t think Einbinder needs three Emmy nominations for that character.
February 2, 2023 at 5:35 pm #1205281605I thought Williams being 1st in the odds looked a bit strange when I entered my predictions in but does anyone else get the feeling that there seems to be a lot of buzz around him as of late? I guess in part that could be because of his Globe win and the JanineGregory storyline in these past few episodes but there’s something about him within the whole ensemble structure of the show that just feels particularly noticeable right now almost like with Ralph this time last year.
Obviously Goldstein managed to repeat last year so he could very well do the same again but I’m curious to see what the reception Nick Mohammed’s performance this season ends up being because with it looking like Nate is going to have a big arc I could see potential vote-splitting going on like with Waddingham and Temple last year.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I agree Einbinder could be vulnerable depending on how Hacks lands. Her Emmy loss in spite of the open field and SAG snub suggests to me that there isn’t really so much of an urgent desire to recognise her for this character as one would think and Hacks has really been under-performing with the guilds getting dropped by DGA and ACE after winning those awards for its first season.
I can see the return of the restricted ballot hurting her if the show isn’t really in the top tier in the series race seeing that the Ted Lasso and Abbott women aside we’ll be having Borstein and potentially Strong (if she submits in supporting and not guest on their final seasons) and voters could very well feel like they owe Goldberg a bone with the controversy behind her snub last time round like with Odenkirk and Seehorn last year.
I actually wonder with all this in mind and the show set to finish shooting a month later than usual (they usually finish in March but SpoilerTV has them finishing in April) and the elimination of the hanging episodes rule if HBO might decide not to rush it to make eligibility and hold it off for next year. They already have Barry and they could potentially move The White Lotus to comedy if they wanted to focus more on Succession and The Last of Us in drama plus aside from Jean it’s probably not going to be win competitive for anything with the novelty around it having worn off.

Yes and no. I agree he’s jumped up a bit and the Globe win was great for him but the press is infatuated with Abbott to an extent I’m still not completely convinced the actors are. I’ve always been on the skeptical side but even I thought they’d get more than Quinta individually at SAG.

I think moving Hacks to 2024 is smart. I don’t think they’ll let The White Lotus move to comedy (I am a bit inclined to think it would also be seen quite poorly) but that field’s going to clear out next cycle quite a bit and they’re really frontloading the year so they might be robbing Peter to pay Paul this cycle vs next generally

I very much doubt it. They’ve already done a TCA panel and they’ve got a couple of other comedy/dramedy options and the comedy actress/supp actress categories are pretty stacked (but next year will clear out a bit)

I was a little confused too. Tyler’s having a moment but nothing close to a dominant run at Winter awards. He got the Globe in a weak category (where pundits didn’t even know what to do with it or who to predict) but lost Critic’s Choice to Henry Winkler and the big one not getting in at SAG while Anthony Carrigan did. Someone here mentioned the kind of character he plays doesn’t tend to register well with actors (ala John Krasinski on the Office) and that may be what worked against him at SAG and could also impact the Emmys.
It will be interesting if 3 shows get 2 actors in (Tyler/Christopher for Abbott, Brett/Nick for Ted and Henry/Anthony for Barry) how much vote splitting may factor in or it all hits everyone equally it’s not a factor.

I actually think (of the nominated four) only really Ralph is “actor-y (Walter does have her moments).
Quinta is heavily helped by her BTS involvement, Krasinski/Williams is apt.
Janelle plays Ava like a standup would (and she is, so that’s not surprising). It’s funny but I never think she feels like an sctual principal of a school whilst everyone else feels so grounded and I worry she’ll have diminishing returns.
February 2, 2023 at 8:40 pm #1205281800I know linda cardellini is a previous nominee and gave a strong perfomance… but dead to me just seems so buzzless outside of applegate. Do you guys really think she has enough passion to get the nod? What are the odds?

I don’t think she’s happening, the little buzz the show has is all around Applegate (which is a shame because I very much preferred Cardellini this season).
FYC:
The HBO darlings everywhere (The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Perry Mason, White House Plumbers, Love & Death);
The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);
Poker Face, The Great, The Bear, Evil (especially Katja Herbers) and The Good Fight.Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!

She can absolutely happen (Dead to Me is a lot more watched than you’d think) but I can’t see her being prioritized unless Applegate wins SAG. If Smart does move to 2024 I think that’s probably the lineup change that would benefit her the most
