If Quinta wins SAG I’m switching.

It was easily a top 3 contender for series last year and it hasn’t even had time to release a new season yet. Plus Jean Smart is still actively winning big awards. If she loses SAG I could maybe see what people are saying but it still seems like an awards darling to me at least, even if it’s not always winning everything.

It missed DGA just after winning for example, it missed other guilds as well.

In spite of the reigning comedy series Emmy champion being ineligible at the winter awards this year it not only failed to make any gains there from a more wide open field (as all three of Abbott Elementary, Barry and Only Murders in the Building did) but went from wins at guilds such as ACE and DGA to snubs in favour of shows that failed to get nominated for the corresponding categories at the Emmys like Atlanta and The Marvelous Maisel.

February 6, 2023 at 6:09 am #1205293941The series is still very good quality wise. HBO is just broke and doesn’t have the campaigning budgets of Apple TV, Disney, Netflix etc…
I don’t think that’s it..
February 6, 2023 at 9:46 am #1205294242There’s three potential wins for Brunson here: Series, Writer and Actress. A hat trick would be impressive though it is unlikely. There is also the danger of her splitting votes across the ballot.
I believe the weakest category for her is in actress, but SAG could change that.
Phoebe Waller Bridge pulled it off just a few years ago. In her case as well Actress was the biggest longshot, but I think it’s very possible if they go all in on the show for her to pull it off.

And then Dan Levy pulled it off an ever bigger one with Series, Supp Actor, Writing and Directing 💀

February 6, 2023 at 10:59 am #1205294422I wouldn’t say that idea is too far off, the marketing for Hacks is far less impressive than other comedy series.
Eh the marketing was even worse for the first season (which was dated at the last minute and didn’t have any social media presence like the show did in its second) and it still won ACE and DGA alongside 3 above the line Emmys and got nominated at the former over a show that got in over it there this year (Only Murders in the Building). That’s clearly not the reason for its fall as a contender.

“Private School” should be winning the writing Emmy. It’s peak comedy.

February 7, 2023 at 4:33 am #1205295406I notice a lot of people disagreeing with me that Hacks decline is due to HBO budgeting issues, can anyone else offer any better explanations?
There’s no evidence HBO aren’t setting aside a budget for FYC of Hacks or any particular program. HBO $$$ issues are more likely to prevent successor shows from being commissioned than effect the marketing/FYC budget.
I think the show has likely stagnated audience wise where other shows around it have emerged bigger or stronger (stagnated rather than declined might be a better descriptor overall).

I think the decline is more so due to a) more competition and b) the novelty factor of its first season potentially wearing off a bit for its second? Hacks has underperformed a fair amount compared to newer shows like Abbott Elementary and The Bear. Granted, Abbott has also missed guilds, but it didn’t miss DGA after winning there last time and being an Emmy winner in directing (it wasn’t even nominated). I just think the overall enthusiasm for Hacks has died off a tad in favor of the “shiny new things,” which Hacks was somewhat for its first season.
FYC:
Succession, Industry, Ted Lasso, Dead to Me, and Fleishman Is in Trouble in all categories!February 7, 2023 at 5:56 am #1205295502Now we know it is making eligibility I’ve decided to put The Great in the final slot in my comedy series predictions. I don’t think it was that far off from a series nomination last year (especially seeing how Atlanta ended up performing) and I think with the return of the restricted ballot and What We Do in the Shadows‘s guild under-performance and Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s ineligibility that the circumstances are ripe for it to slip in, almost like The Good Place in 2019. Hulu also tend to do well with Spring releases whether with The Dropout and Pam and Tommy last year or The Handmaid’s Tale‘s over-performance and Aidy Bryant’s surprise nod the year before that or Ramy‘s over-performance the year before that so I think something could be there.
