, I despised Johnny Lawrence yet now question what was I thinking lol. The trio behind the show deserve significant praise too for not only concept but for keeping standards pretty high. Even the last season which had the first half streak of average episodes had an extremely strong finish.
I feel like Cobra Kai getting a series nomination is the sort of thing that people might judge in the moment but will probably age just fine. The show has maintained a pretty consistent level of quality and has had a long run which means it’ll live on as a library title for years and the people who like it really like it. On the flipside whilst a nomination for Pen15 was inspired it has a very tiny cultural footprint in the real world.
March 26, 2023 at 12:39 am #1205364023I wouldn’t sleep on “Shrinking”… Everyone outside of these boards loves it… My fellow TV Academy member friends are bullish quite enamored with it… Apple will do a big push for it and it will get a bunch of deserved noms if you ask me… Ford, of course, is the obvious lock nom. But, i’d argue it can get in for Series, Actor, Supporting Actress, and Casting to name a few… I know it will be among my choices…
I’d actually love if Apple can get Schmigadoon in there too, but I may be dreaming on that one…
Current Series Predix:
1. Abbott Elementary
2. Ted Lasso
3. Only Murders in the Building
4. Barry
5. The Bear (but argh, it’s a drama)
6. Shrinking
7. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
8. What We Do in the ShadowsMarch 26, 2023 at 1:58 am #1205364053wouldn’t sleep on “Shrinking”… Everyone outside of these boards loves it… My fellow TV Academy member friends are bullish quite enamored with it
Thanks, appreciate the input.
March 26, 2023 at 2:22 am #1205364062I may be wrong, but Shrinking to me feels a little bit like Made for Love when a bunch of people predicted Ray Romano to get nominated just like they’re predicting Harrison Ford.

It took a couple episodes to find its footing but it finished strong. It’s also the most obvious place for Ted Lasso fans to go to once that’s over this season.
I also imagine they’ll be able to churn out seasons rather quickly so it should be eligible next year too.

I agree with this statement. I understand bullish-ness at this point but I am so wary of how much campaign energy Ted will take. Apple haven’t really proved to me they can handle dual campaigns in the same category

Maybe it can get into series and actor? I don’t see it this year and there’s really not much room for the latter. If you have JAW, Sudeikis, Hader, Martin and Short as locks (which I think they are), then Segel would be battling for the last spot with Hoult, Glover and Yeun. I have Yeun in right now but Hoult and Glover both got in last year so it’s a really competitive category.
But with Hader and Sudeikis gone next year, a few spots do open up.

The only first season show at this point I think I’m confident on getting multiple nominations is The Bear, but I can see various combinations of other shows getting in an actor and/or a series nom. I currently have Lyonne and Yeun getting in, Ford, and Wednesday getting in to series but Ortega (despite the odds being reversed) missing, but I’m not very set on any of those. I think it’s going to be a year where we see thirteen or fourteen shows across the nominations.
March 26, 2023 at 7:53 am #1205364214I feel like Shrinking has increased in buzz as the season went on, which it needed. I’ve seen tweets about the show with double or triple the interaction than a month ago. I also think it could appeal to an older crowd that’s not online.
Having said that, I’m not comfortable kicking any of my eight in series out for Shrinking just yet. I do think it’ll have a great S2 though as we lose Ted Lasso, Barry, and Maisel.

I think Apple can handle campaigns for both, as the intent will be different as Shrinking is campaigning early for nominations (it’s not win competitive in anything but maybe Ford in supporting) while Ted will be campaigning more after nominations for wins (seriously outside of a few extra acting noms and BTL there is nothing they need to campaign for at the nomination stage). For Apple this is an opportunity to show they can play with the big boys for getting multiple quality shows in.
I also noted from the beginning people who like Shrinking really like it. They don’t need everyone at the Academy to love it but just have enough of those passionate fans in the Academy. I don’t know if it really can get more than 2 ATL nominations but getting into series is certainly possible.
I can see the supporting actor race turning into Ford v. Goldstein- the story is just catnip buzz for media and pundits (especially since Ford’s likely episode submission was written by Goldstein).

Good point under an unlimited ballot. I need to get my mind in to the slightly different logic of that. And terrific point re nominations vs wins.
March 26, 2023 at 12:10 pm #1205364462I actually have Harrison Ford winning supporting actor but I’m not currently predicting nominations for other cast. I might now reconsider in supporting actress though as I’m having a little trouble with that category.

I think for Ford the nomination is more difficult than the win, if he gets in then he is competitive.
He lives in you, he lives in me, he watches over everything we see.
Into the water, into the truth, in your reflection, he lives in you.March 26, 2023 at 12:23 pm #1205364477It was more about I May Destroy You than Emily in Paris tbh and the Emmys flowered IMDY with nods, Coel was a 4x nominee for it, so the Emily in Paris nod just passed by.
And Michaela deserved each one of them
