Nah don’t backtrack now, read what you wrote
I know what I wrote. She doesn’t act at this time at the level of many of these actresses and if she wins it won’t be down to the craft. I’d bet most agree but can’t be bothered to debate it
March 26, 2023 at 5:08 pm #1205364806Quinta Brunson is the frontrunner to win the acting Emmy for a character that is based on Quinta Brunson, written by Quinta Brunson, and written for Quinta Brunson.
This is why I would be more satisfied if Brunson’s talents were recognized as a writer again. Or even a triumph as show runner with Abbott winning series.
March 26, 2023 at 5:10 pm #1205364808@wolfali I’m curious, you seem very knowledgeable on this. How did Handmaids Tale pull off a surprise win in 2017? I thought it was because of a ranked order ballot, but I was mistaken.
When Game of Thrones was forced to take a year off due to production delays there was a wide open drama series field. At the start of the season it looked like there would be a battle between buzzy new series The Crown (which won at the Golden Globes and took drama actor and actress at SAG) and Stranger Things (which won the SAG ensemble and PGA awards) with other breakouts like Westworld and This is Us also emerging as contenders in the field. Then after receiving near universal acclaim (something that is a rarity for a first season of television, I believe only The Office UK had a higher metacritic rating) and emerging as a breakout hit for Hulu, The Handmaid’s Tale emerged as a dark horse. Coupled with an overdue narrative for Elisabeth Moss (a multiple Emmy nominee for Mad Men and Top of the Lake) and the increased relevancy of the source material following the election of Trump, the show just quickly continued to build steam which carried over into it over-performing in nominations following which Moss solidified herself as the one to beat in the drama actress race and the show emerged as a dark horse in the drama series race.
The reception to the show was just so strong that it ultimately ended up being an unstoppable force for its first season (well until the SAG awards but that’s a story for another day). Like with Fleabag two years later in the comedy race.
Solidarity with the striking writers. Pay them the wages they are owed for bringing us the content we are all on here because of!
March 26, 2023 at 5:12 pm #1205364814Quinta winning would fit former winners like Glover, Hader and Waller-Bridge. Actors who did more than just acting in their own shows.
Neither Quinta nor Selena should be in the winning conversation to be honest. Applegate, Cardellini and Lyonne are simply superior to both of them.

March 26, 2023 at 5:14 pm #1205364819Yikes, you reply to a person saying Selena don’t deserve by randomly throwing in Quinta Brunson, who also deserves flowers as an actor, she’s really good in Abbott and I didn’t see the need for the “drag”

Well they’re the only ones who picked up wins at winter awards, excusing Lyonne as Poker Face premiered ex post facto.

Only Murders in the Building - Best Comedy Series
Steve Martin, Martin Short - Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Selena Gomez - Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
James Caverly - Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy SeriesMarch 26, 2023 at 5:31 pm #1205364835Quinta Brunson is the frontrunner to win the acting Emmy for a character that is based on Quinta Brunson, written by Quinta Brunson, and written for Quinta Brunson. But sure, Selena is the one destroying the craft?
What in the world is this? 💀 the acting like as if Quinta isn’t more acclaimed on all fronts than Selena and being a writer + actor for one project is somehow bad? Atlanta, Fleabag, I May Destroy You hello?
March 26, 2023 at 5:35 pm #1205364838Regardless of what you think about Selena, you have to admit her work is challenging. She’s a rookie being thrown in with the sharks. Not only with Martin Short & Steve Martin, but with the wider cast of Tina Fey, Shirley MacLaine, Jane Lynch etc. But she does a fantastic job.
Season 1 criticism consensus reads that she holds her own. Season 2 read that she shines through. I am confident that she can take on more with Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd jumping aboard for S3.
March 26, 2023 at 5:37 pm #1205364841A rookie that headlined a show for 4 seasons among other projects?

Some Selena fans truly got pissed because others don’t like or aren’t in love with her performance like they are. She has always been the weakest part of the show and this is coming from someone who liked her work on the show. Voters probably simply didn’t click with her. Even SAG chose Brosnahan who was dropped everywhere during winter season over her and Murders was really popular last year.

March 26, 2023 at 5:40 pm #1205364853Some of you need to stop, omg. I’m a Selena fan and I want her to get nominated because she does deserves it. If she gets nominated everyone knows she’s not winning because it’s obviously between Quinta and Christina, with the latter being my hope-diction and prediction. With that being said, it kind of pains me to think Christina will probably get in without Linda when they both deserve the recognition, especially Linda for this season. Besides from Quinta, Christina, and Rachel, the last 3 spots are up in the air between Selena, Jenna, Natasha, Elle, Linda, and maybe Ali Wong if Beef breaks through. The constant back and forth isn’t contributing to the discourse.

I mean if you think her Disney channel resume measures up to the works of the actors listed … that’s on you.
March 26, 2023 at 5:40 pm #1205364857I saw she was even no.2 briefly this weekend, her chances are inflated
I am of the opinion that the narrative of Ortega being the “only thing anyone likes about the series” is overblown if you remove it from subjective opinion and look at the evidence.
I think it is very very likely in series and Ortega’s viability is a moving target depending on the competitiveness of the category and Netflix’s priorities – she’s one of four contenders now and we probably don’t need to rehash the fact that she’s not the most self-supporting contender.
Clearly she is a true lead and the series fundamentally doesn’t work without her, but craft and directing noms and multiple series noms (BAFTA, Globe, AACTA etc) don’t really match an argument about it all being about Ortega.
It also has viewership patterns/levels that were both a) extremely strong on release, suggesting the franchise/other known cast played a role in getting people in b) excessive and c) out of whack with the viewership levels and demos of most similar series, so the adults are very likely holding on to something else.
It’s obviously weak in writing, but that’s just one group, and it’s probably going under the radar for VFX support (if you’re a VFX person it is almost certainly on your ballot because there really aren’t that many options in comedy).
March 26, 2023 at 5:41 pm #1205364859I wasn’t comparing. Both are great at what they do. I was refuting a point about ‘Craft’ meaning anything.
You’re using what Quinta does in a negative connotation to refute that Selena is destroying the craft and it sounds like implying that Quinta is by the sarcastic comment lol. Don’t be surprised when you’re dragged for it.
