With Taraji playing Janine’s mom, we have the show’s first Emmy win confirmed for this year.
Her seeing the other guest actress contenders:

April 1, 2023 at 5:00 pm #1205373720Russian Doll s2 ended a three-year hiatus with an unceremonious dump on a Wednesday that wasn’t really promoted much by Netflix.
I don’t necessarily think RD was dumped or not campaigned (it still got quite a lot of press) but it came out in the middle of the content vomit of late last cycle and did effectively get lost (like a lot of things) and was less watched than Poker Face.
That may however suggest voters are a bit ambivalent to Lyonne campaigning and the show is going to get in on its merits and not because of how hard Peacock push it.
I think she is helped by a limited ballot though.
April 1, 2023 at 5:05 pm #1205373722Both seasons hold at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, but even so… if Killing Eve & Game of Thrones reign taught us anything is that the Emmys will ignore the critics if they like you that much
Honestly these days I find myself looking more and more at the audience ratings than the critics ratings, they tend to be more accurate once the numbers get sufficiently big. The audience clearly had a better view of season 2 than the critics did for Russian Doll
April 1, 2023 at 5:09 pm #1205373727It looks like Lyonne might’ve been smeared… I’m excluding poker face too
I don’t think she’s been smeared, what I do think is that Russian Doll came back after a 3 year hiatus with little to no buzz and all the incessant campaigning Natasha did for the show didn’t even matter to a show that was DOA. With Poker Face however, it was released at a time with little competition and was ultimately given the time to grow its audience and thus grow its awards chances. Natasha has writing more or less on lock and Emmy voters know her and that’s why she/Poker Face feel like a safe-ish pick.
Just everything Hulu.
April 1, 2023 at 5:15 pm #1205373729I’ve heard of Lyonne being smeared, but I don’t know the exact volume of it
April 1, 2023 at 5:20 pm #1205373737Regardless the consensus was that Russian Doll season 2 was weaker than season 1 (I personally thought they were just as good as each other) whilst the people who love Poker Face love Poker Face and it’s the shiny new thing in town. They have as much in common as Ammonite and Mare of Easttown do as award vehicles.

April 1, 2023 at 5:21 pm #1205373742Re the unlimited ballot the fundamental thing that it started doing was making individual category tallies go to four or five rather than three on a regular basis, and I would presume the intention of the change is to try and curb that as a trend from getting out of control.
April 1, 2023 at 5:23 pm #1205373744And peacock literally have nothing else likely to be in contention anywhere other than this show / actress / director / writing. Not even variety series or game show by the look of it. All promotional push in one direction
I bet something gets nom

This makes sense because her Variety piece today came across like a total rebrand, even her voice changed

April 1, 2023 at 5:27 pm #1205373757You can’t deny that decline of Russian Doll isn’t sus. I get the 3 year hiatus didn’t help, but to go from 13 noms to just 1 is very questionable. Very good show, but again, questionable.

I agree. I have said previously on this thread that I have no skin in this game because I vastly individually preferred Russian Doll season 2 to Poker Face (which I ultimately just don’t like at the end of the day in a way that’s not personal, it’s preference).
This is also more a personal opinion (however, I don’t think I’m alone on it), but my biggest turnoff for Poker Face is not my ambivalence, is actually how aggressive the Peacock campaign is for it, which in a different way I also felt with House of The Dragon and The Rings of Power.
The insane campaign budgets and near constant campaigning feel calculated as opposed to authentic to me. I don’t begrudge networks and streamers backing shows they believe in but I need to feel like something is not just a press and marketing push. I DO think Poker Face has support but it does feel heavily weighted by the press.
