Why’re people so sure of Beef? Like how is Ali Wong getting in over gomez?
I think it’s because Netflix is bigger when it deals to viewership and awards campaigning than Hulu.

Yes, but also because she is an experienced comedian who the early feed back says has adapted that to the TV comedy field. It could also be crap. The trailer looked slick though.
April 2, 2023 at 4:12 pm #1205374891It’s also a well reviewed Asian led A24 series post EEAAO. The press are going to support it all season unless Yeun or Wong murder someone, even if the viewership is like 200K.
Half the awards commentators have no idea what’s going on with TV and have just come off the film side.
April 2, 2023 at 6:16 pm #1205374973Is anyone else feeling like Shrinking may overperform (in at least this forum’s view) in nominations including not just getting into series but getting into writing and directing as well (it had multiple episodes directed by James Ponsoldt and his work on Daisy Jones he’s certainly having a moment right now)?
I actually think writing is possible even if it doesn’t get into series. I haven’t seen the show but I feel like these types of therapy shows are very writer-y and the show has a respected writing pedigree behind it.
Directing on the other hand I don’t see. There are only 6 slots (due to one slot being reserved for a multi-camera every year) and the competition in that category is stiff with The Bear, Only Murders in the Building (which got two nominations last year), Poker Face (which will have Rian Johnson on the ballot), DGA nominee Wednesday and the series finales of DGA nominees and previous winners Barry, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and reigning champ Ted Lasso. Not to mention Beef which could be a baitier directing showcase.
Solidarity with the striking writers. Pay them the wages they are owed for bringing us the content we are all on here because of!
April 2, 2023 at 7:43 pm #1205375110Party Down made their case for Emmy admission. Scott, Marino, Garner, Starr are obvious acting contenders. And the surprise at the end of the finale was something I suspected Thursday. It was a nice little bow to wrap around a series that didn’t miss a step, even 13 years between seasons. May there be a season 4 next year.
April 2, 2023 at 8:05 pm #1205375132Does anyone know when the review embargo for Maisel lifts?
this indicates 12/4 for anything of substance (read the third comment)
i'm watching screeners of a show I'm writing about and I'm mad about a thing and I want to know whether it was a contract issue or an actual writers' choice and i can't tweet about it but watch this space for more

Eh, don’t be too much. I come across those sorts of tweets all the time looking for embargo dates and it’s frequently some specific reviewer/critic thing that they are the only person worried about. I remember being curious about a near identical tweet and it was the most innocuous thing like “I don’t understand why this person is wearing this short wig instead of their naturally long hair”.
April 2, 2023 at 8:42 pm #1205375151Yeah, but the follow-up to that tweet seems to suggest a major character abruptly leaving the show, and they can’t tell if it was a writer’s choice or a contractual thing.
My guess… Stephanie Hsu will be leaving after episode 1. The “great character/actor/storyline” mentioned in the reply makes me think they’re going to break up Joel and Mei in the first episode, going along with the abruptness because of how well they were doing at the end of s4. Season 5 started filming in February 2022, right when Hsu started seeing an uptick in success (even before the release of EEAAO she was starting to snag bigger parts like Joy Ride), and it would make sense if her team decided it was more important for her to be promoting a potentially career-changing role in EEAAO and stay available for other projects over filming a show where she’s a third-rung character. Would be very disappointing if true, but it would make sense. Also, I just checked and yeah she’s completely absent from the trailer.
Luke Kirby was of course my other thought, but with how in-and-out he’s been in every season as a guest star, I don’t really know how abrupt any end to his storyline could really be (unless that critic is not aware of Lenny Bruce’s true story). I also don’t know what he would’ve otherwise been contractually obligated to.
FYC: Bad Sisters (Anne-Marie Duff) Cunk on Earth (Diane Morgan), Fleishman Is in Trouble (Lizzy Caplan/Claire Danes), Industry (Marisa Abela/Myha'la Herrold), Physical (Rose Byrne), Poker Face (Ellen Barkin/Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Chloë Sevigny), The White Lotus (Sabrina Impacciatore)

January-March 2022 he was filming Boston Strangler. I think The Independent (Peacock original starring John Cena) might have filmed around the same time as well.
April 2, 2023 at 9:42 pm #1205375170That tweet is definitely about Luke or Stephanie. Luke is in the finale though which critics haven’t seen yet.

Ahhh! I didn’t really analyse that too much, I literally just searched for embargoes. Sorry if I spoilt it for anyone.
April 3, 2023 at 5:34 am #1205375434As long as that tweet isn’t about Kirby then I’m good. I don’t really care about Mei anyway, so that would be whatever. She probably got that job in Chicago(?) and left Joel.
April 3, 2023 at 5:48 am #1205375450Mei and Joel always felt fated anyway, it’s inevitable Midge & Joel end up back together
fair pay for writers.

Mei is a nice character but her story is not really relevant to the main plot, if she leaves, it wouldn’t be a big loss.
