Abbott trumping Lasso would be a heartwarming underdog victory
March 29, 2023 at 1:39 pm #1205368391I think it’s still early as there have been indications in the past two episodes that the heart which made the show such a success is still there, especially with the Goldstein centric 2nd episode. I think it could go either way at this point.
I also like the concept of the Zava/obvious zlatan character to a point but the adulation just went on into too many scenes for me. Temples friend/colleague is annoying too lol
March 29, 2023 at 1:42 pm #1205368394I think if Ted Lasso loses it’s going to be to The Bear and not Abbott especially if the latter doesn’t get a directing nom.

I agree but also think Barry and Maisel could easily get in the picture if either finish spectacularly
March 29, 2023 at 1:57 pm #1205368407Goldderby underestimates Lasso every year but they still keep winning…Reminds me of the discourse around the latter seasons of GOT where it’s clear that it’s almost too big to fail but people keep hopedicting…Barry for all it’s fans isn’t winning, Abott has shown weakness in it’s winter awards performance which leaves The Bear but if Barry couldn’t win despite universal acclaim for every season, I fail to see a straight up drama winning series…
March 29, 2023 at 2:01 pm #1205368411Ted Lasso is a force but it is not a juggernaut like Game of Thrones was. The writing loss to Abbott last year showed a slip in the cracks.
The difference between this season and the previous two is the lukewarm audience and critics response, it could manifest come September.March 29, 2023 at 2:06 pm #1205368419I think Lasso is winning because there is too much variety in the buffet for a strong opponent. VEEP tackling Modern Family’s reign in the 2010s was secured by lack of stronger competition in the category, but this year all these runner ups are gonna split votes and that’s only gonna benefit Ted Lasso.

This makes no sense as an indicator of decline given that the show has never won writing. And it actually gained a Directing win last year.
March 29, 2023 at 2:08 pm #1205368425I still think it’s the frontrunner for series but with the muted buzz it has received so far and underwhelming critical reception I’m curious to see whether the TCA nominate Ted Lasso or not. Granted we won’t know until we see the response Ted Lasso‘s finale (which no one other than the people working om it have seen) gets and critics don’t vote for the Emmys but that organisation has become quite sheep-ish as of late (even giving Dopesick their limited prize last year season 4 of The Crown their drama prize two years ago after snubbing it in program of the year and individual achievement) and they have given red flags in the past around how strong shows are with stuff like Maisel season 3 and Ozark season 3 getting snubbed just before they under-performed at the Emmys and even the penultimate season of Game of Thrones which ended up only winning drama series by a hair.
Now that you say it, this increases the chances of “Better call saul” to sweep at this year’s ceremony

Yeah, comedy series had a renaissance during the 2020’s decade, it’s so refreshing to see.
Abbott elementary,Hacks, Only murders in the building, Ted lasso, Shrinking, Schmigadoon, Reservation dogs, Girls5eva, Ghosts
And we’re just in 2023
March 29, 2023 at 2:18 pm #1205368431I mean ignoring BTL wins given Ted Lasso is not a craft heavy show it’s two seasons so far as actually performed better in ATL wins than GOT latter seasons which only ever won for Dinklage… It’s impossible for any show to match GOT in popularity so I’m not sure what being a Juggernaut as GOT actually means…
March 29, 2023 at 2:40 pm #1205368450Well in theory Ted Lasso could be Veep 2.0 as opposed to Game of Thrones 2.0 where it wins for an undeniable season of television, surprisingly triumphs for a lackluster penultimate run over other buzzed about contenders that lead people to think it is unbeatable but then returns for its final season two years later with more muted buzz and passion and loses to a sleeping juggernaut (in this case The Bear).
What I will say about Ted Lasso though (and this is why I’m not being too reactive about it after these three episodes) is it feels like the type of show the industry likes a lot more than audiences and critics do and only stops caring for it, when they get tired of it or something more eye-catching comes along. That could be the case this year with The Bear but it could just as easily not be. I think it’s too early to say, especially seeing as The Bear will technically have the most recency with its second season airing just as both nominations and wins voting gets underway.
Solidarity with the striking writers. Pay them the wages they are owed for bringing us the content we are all on here because of!
March 29, 2023 at 2:47 pm #1205368457There is also the 2.5b elephant in the room. Apple has paid that for MLS rights and you can bet that even if the quality drops they will be trying to push it hard from their end

Was Lasso winning a suprise tho, many predicted in underperforming in wins due to it’s shut out in the Creative awards and their own bias…It not only retained wins in Actor and SA but won directing also which tells me the votes wasn’t even close…The Bear could easily pull a actor/directing combo which would not be an underperformance while Lasso still takes series, when last did a show like the bear win Comedy Series?…
