September 24, 2022 at 4:59 pm #1205097307My current comedy series eight (assuming Ted Lasso misses eligibility per Indiewire’s report):
Obviously Ted Lasso is safely in and the pre-nominations frontrunner if it does make eligibility and there’s a question over whether Hacks itself will make eligibility due to the new rule on hanging episodes. Regardless of those wait and see scenarios though I do feel like this field is prime for a breakthrough from something that comes along in the Spring, whether a returning show that didn’t quite breakthrough on freshman season last year or a new show à la Abbott and Severance. It obviously remains to be seen what that is or if we even have one (I currently have Mr and Mrs. Smith in that slot based on sheer pedigree) but I think what I find more interesting is that each of the returning series contenders from last year feel like they could be too strong to push out. Maisel and What We Do in the Shadows are obviously the vulnerable ones here considering they were essentially contending for those last few spots this year (and the former is coming off of the first year in its history in which it’s gone home from the Emmys empt handed whilst the latter had a dismal guild performance in a much weaker field last year) but even with those shows they feel like they have strong cases. The former is contending with its final season and is still a pretty widely watched audience juggernaut whilst the latter feels like it has a really strong concentration of support within the Television Academy (like Better Call Saul and Curb Your Enthusiasm). I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how both perform at the guilds and how Maisel‘s final season ends up being received (although personally I would be surprised if it were any worse than this season’s reception considering how “How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall” was not only received but also how mapped the direction it seems to be going in for its final season from there was).
There’s obviously a question over how well The Bear does but I’m actually feeling quite optimistic about its chances here? The overall buzz still feels very loud months after it aired, its Hulu’s most commercially successful comedy* contender after Only Murders in the Building and I think it will be bolstered by critical support. With a vacuum at the winter awards in the comedy actor category due to Ted Lasso‘s ineligibility there it wouldn’t actually surprise me if Jeremy Allen White and becomes the early frontrunner in comedy actor.
Predictions and awards races aside I have to say I’m really looking forward to this season in comedy. It’s been said that the comedy field this year feels weaker on paper than last year’s but I’m actually just as excited about it tbh. Although that could just be because of how much I’ve enjoyed these seasons of The Bear, Only Murders in the Building, Physical and The Rehearsal that have already aired (as well as the primetime ineligible Big Boys) and the state of excitement I’m currently in over Abbott Elementary
ThursdaysWednesdays.FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
September 24, 2022 at 5:05 pm #1205097323Don’t forget that they’re coming for Netflix’s Beef…

September 24, 2022 at 5:11 pm #1205097329I find it so ironic that Netflix rarely ever does well in comedy and is the only series category they’ve yet to have won because I personally find most of their comedy series to be vastly better than most of their dramas and limited series lol.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Last year they had no nominees in series and it’s looking like the trend will repeat.

The reality is though no one really watched The Chair or Mo or the last season of Russian Doll and visibility matters with the Emmys, but mostly with Netflix.
The Netflix audience watches Cobra Kai or Emily in Paris and teen comedies. They need to make something commercial happen.
September 24, 2022 at 8:33 pm #1205097455To be fair, their 2 biggest English-language seasons to date didn’t do great with Emmys this year. Stranger getting series but nothing for acting/writing/directing; Bridgerton not getting that either.
Shows from this century which had 3+ major noms for every season:
C: 7 30 Rock (06)*
4 Maisel (17)
3 Barry (18)
2 Ted Lasso (20)
Hacks (21)
I would predict Maisel to continue its downward slide, except its upcoming season is the end so that could help.
September 25, 2022 at 1:19 am #1205097553Writing and Directing for these two or I’ll be very sad. I do believe one has stronger writing and the other stronger directing but I can’t choose which one I’d like to be “The Boy from 6B” of S2 (as in the episode with most nominations at the Emmys).
