I’m still predicting The Diplomat to take the eighth slot.

And aside from all other arguments, Netflix only getting 1 drama in (even in a weak year for them) while either Disney get 2 or HBO 4 isn’t 100% fully convincing to me.

I don’t disagree but I also think conversely the same could be said of Apple getting zero drama series nominations after having two big above the line drama contenders in Severance and The Morning Show and coming off of consecutive successes at the Emmys and Oscars over the past two years with CODA, Ted Lasso and Causeway. I don’t think any network or streamer is necessarily guaranteed to have multiple nominations or likewise that it is impossible for another to get more than 2. We’ve seen many cases of both happening over the years.

Anyway submissions for Andor and The Mandalorian are out. The former is submitting three guests (Serkis, Shaw and Whittaker) whilst the latter is submitting nine. Katee Sackhoff has been bumped up to lead for the latter whilst the former is only submitting Benjamin Caron for directing for “Rix Road” and is submitting both “Rix Road” and “One Way Out” for writing. Interestingly the former is submitting four editors but has decided to omit BAFTA nominee Frances Parker.

We’ve seen many cases of both happening over the years.

Last year is a good example with Hulu getting 3 shows in for limited series when HBO and Netflix only got in one each. Both of them even had perfectly strong second choices on paper; acting+writing+directing noms, major guild wins. Hulu’s overperformance is made even more interesting by the fact that before last year, it had only ever gotten 3 different shows nominated for the top award. They surpassed that in a single year with the three limited nominees + OMITB in comedy. At the end of the day, even Emmy favourite networks/streamers aren’t owed anything.

A Negroni. Sbagliato. With Prosecco in it.

Andor submitting just a single director, especially one who has been nominated multiple times recently, is the best decision they could have made. Every bit of advantage is crucial seeing how seemingly on the edge it’s in this category.

Whew I called Katee Sackhoff going Lead, glad I made the right prediction. Personally she’d miss my ballot but I would not be mad at her being a sole Mando nomination.

Kat and I also predicted that Katee Sackhoff would be promoted to Lead. She is arguably the protagonist of The Mandalorian season 3.

Not super relevant to the Drama Series race but its nice to see her finally getting more mainstream roles!

Great viewing numbers for BCS for the w/e 4/30/23 – 968m mins biggest ever on Nielsen for the show.

Wow at Disney’s number 2 show being andor at a paltry 51m mins and Hulus No 1 being Saint X 89m mins – that’s shocking

Yeah, this is a really good call for Mando to have a lead who isn’t…well, a voice performance. I don’t think she’ll get in but you never know, Sackhoff has been working for about twenty five years and will have worked with a LOT more people than the other genre leads in Ramsey and D’Arcy

    Just per TVLine/Nielsen:

“The Keri Russell starrer, Nielsen notes, had the oldest-skewing audience of any title in the Top 10 for the week of April 24, with two-thirds of its viewers being over 50.”

We’ve speculated this on data but this is not at all surprising.

I do wonder – looking at the four shows they have in the prediction centre (Queen Charlotte, The Diplomat, The Night Agent, The Sandman) if the answer isn’t that they get a hodgepodge.

-I think The Diplomat fits the bill the best but it skews awfully old and it will probably do kind of average in techs. Should have support in writing and acting for both Russell and Sewell, I think. If it were me this would be the show I would support overall.

-You could make an argument for The Night Agent getting a couple of techs given it was massive (it feels like it has the vibe of a show that could get in for stunts, for instance). I don’t think anyone has any designs on it getting in ATLs.

-Queen Charlotte will probably do well in techs but largely lack lead actress support. They might have it in supporting where the older cast is more familiar to them, and Shonda wrote most of this so it’s possible they get writing. I wouldn’t nominate it for direction but I am conscious that Verica did very well for Inventing Anna last year.

-The Sandman is possibly a guest blindspot even though it tanked at guilds (however, it might be helped by several shows going contemporary)  Gaiman’s stuff tends to attract actors not techs where it’s kind of inconsistent. It has a big middle aged female audience and it’s possibly telling it still has a few guests predicted more than stuff like Yellowjackets and The Crown.
