The reason House of the Dragon has been under-performing is because not everyone wants to commit years of their life to a long-running franchise never mind one that had one of the most polarising final seasons in the history of television. Better Call Saul didn’t catch on until it ended for this very reason in spite of having a built in audience from Breaking Bad. A lot of shows tend to under-perform as they get older and the older they run with awards bodies for similar reasons. Even on a cultural level we’ve been seeing Marvel films have less staying power due to audience fatigue and over-saturatuon.
I actually think that’s also probably why Andor has done fairly well for itself at the guilds because it’s an easy and short show to committ to even if you’re not really into the whole Star Wars thing seeing that the story already has a pin pointed ending.
Exactly what I thought. Also HOTD have a lot of structure and writting issues, some snubs are very deserving.
Star Wars spin-off seems different because they work as a standalone shows/movies.
February 2, 2023 at 7:16 am #1205280685If that was supposed to be a quote reaction, I’m just stating a fact. The show is creepy. It turns people off. Not saying it’s good or bad, but it’s underperforming for a reason.
It’s not the only reason but it’s a large part of what turned me off, I really wouldn’t be surprised if it turned voters off as well. But yes, fatigue is also definitely a part of it.
February 2, 2023 at 7:33 am #1205280702Fatigue is a reason as well IMO, but missing literally everywhere ? Nah, at least one of those award bodies should give this blockbuster of a show a nom. Critics Choice and Golden Globes have gone for it. If it was solely fatigue, you’d think those would not go for it as well since audiences hated the final season of GOT way more than industry. Should be performing mostly like Dahmer, with at least some SAG noms.
February 2, 2023 at 8:45 am #1205280805Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Kat ebbs has also made an interesting point in the past about the fact that Game of Thrones was clearly loved or at least respected by the industry from start to finish, and that perhaps some attempts of the cast and the crew of House of the Dragon to distance themselves from the original series or to suggest they wouldn’t repeat their mistakes didn’t sit well with them.
February 2, 2023 at 9:03 am #1205280844I say this as someone late 30s but I think there aren’t a lot of new performances women over 35 are connecting to (also, I think D’Arcy and Cooke being barely older than the actors that play their sons rubs people the wrong way), plus stuff like Killing Eve ending and The Morning Show missing isn’t helping. I really doubt Moss is missing for that reason, at this point that’s her base.
The one person I’ve noticed people rather like who is not in the conversation but should be is Ann-Marie Duff for Bad Sisters – I would bump her to co-lead or at least get her in the conversation more. Horgan is great but Duff’s character resonates more.
I’d love for Duff to get some recognition. She was also my favorite from the show and her going lead would be very justifiable since the season doesn’t work without her. That being said, I think she definitely gets nominated in supporting if Bad Sisters is big enough to get Series + Horgan in, so I don’t know if Apple would even want to swap her at this point…
February 2, 2023 at 9:54 am #1205280937Considering Elizabeth Debicki’s SAG nomination, do you think Netflix should consider changing her submission to Lead Actress?
February 2, 2023 at 10:01 am #1205280952Tom Hardy and Zazie Beetz will star in Apple TV+ thriller series ‘LAZARUS.’
It is based on the book series by Lars Kepler.

If Coolidge is going to stay in supporting then I think Netflix should move her up to lead if they want her to have any chance of winning. Of course she’ll get nominated regardless of what category she is in.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Yeah, I have, though I do understand how it’s not obvious to someone who isn’t observing the show quite closely. It’s not universal but it has a vibe of wanting to advantage from the original show’s popularity whilst also playing in to the online mob mentality pitting the shows against each other.
No one who genuinely likes GoT and the cast/crew will respond well to that.
(Also, HoTD can be watched alone. It doesn’t require GoT and in fact that’s definitely been part of HBO’s strategy – to target young fans who were turned off by either GoT or were too young to watch the original in real time. The show is inherently fatiguing though, which might be a factor. Trying to track all those time jumps may not be something you want to do if you haven’t really connected with the characters)
February 2, 2023 at 12:37 pm #1205281225My current predicted winners…
(I know it’s foolish to bet against Succession in Writing but we’re early enough that I’m gonna go for the more surprising pick. If Better Call Saul wasn’t almost guaranteed to oversubmit and have multiple episodes nominated, I’d predict it.)

FYC: Bad Sisters (Anne-Marie Duff) Cunk on Earth (Diane Morgan), Fleishman Is in Trouble (Lizzy Caplan/Claire Danes), Industry (Marisa Abela/Myha'la Herrold), Physical (Rose Byrne), Poker Face (Ellen Barkin/Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Chloë Sevigny), The White Lotus (Sabrina Impacciatore)
February 2, 2023 at 1:29 pm #1205281286If Better Call Saul wasn’t almost guaranteed to oversubmit and have multiple episodes nominated
Are they guaranteed to have multiple episodes nominated though (I agree they’ll definitely oversubmit, I’m expecting almost all of season 6B to be on the ballot lol)? “Saul Gone” is the clear standout episode of the season and even on an unlimited ballot the writers only went with more than one episode once and that was in a year where they had two equally acclaimed episodes (“Bagman” and “Bad Choice Road”) in a field where the only other options were The Handmaid’s Tale and Mindhunter. This field on the other hand has 7 incumbent WGA nominees and new passion picks like The Last of Us and Poker Face competing alongside it.
Not saying it’s wrong of course (and as you can probably tell from FYC I definitely wouldn’t mind it happening lol) but I’m just curious about your rationale just for category predicting purposes.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
February 2, 2023 at 1:29 pm #1205281290The show is creepy as fuck. I think it’s clear why industry is not responding so well as social media and online fanbase. Even GOT stopped doing this kind of thing in late seasons.
I’m not sure I’d use “creepy” as my adjective but yes, you’re right, plus various people have gone very hard on the campaign saying it’s super feminist where the original was not, groundbreaking with better gender non conforming characters, is actually a lesbian love story, was progressive because it didn’t show sexual violence (well no, we moved on to graphic childbirth scenes), really went overboard on the inclusion of a couple of undertutilised POC actors (again, not that dissimilar to Anderson and Emmanuel, and now probably less diverse than most genre of its day).
February 2, 2023 at 1:57 pm #1205281347If Coolidge is going to stay in supporting then I think Netflix should move her up to lead if they want her to have any chance of winning. Of course she’ll get nominated regardless of what category she is in.
Considering that like Debicki, Coolidge also certainly has her nomination guaranteed, I think it would be a good strategy for HBO to move her to Lead, considering that there are already half a dozen candidates from The White Lotus in the same category.
I’m really curious if HBO and Netflix will change their minds or keep the submissions where they are.
February 2, 2023 at 1:58 pm #1205281349We just have to wait and see if Succession doesn’t fuck up the finale, considering their 3 for 3 now I hope not.
FYC:
The HBO darlings everywhere (The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Perry Mason, Somebody Somewhere, White House Plumbers, Love & Death);
The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);
Poker Face, The Great, The Bear, Evil (especially Katja Herbers) and The Good Fight.Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!
