I am kinda bummed about it… I hoped it would do better during the awards season, but hey ,at least the vievership was great
It’s a massive commercial success (Bloys at HBO said it exceeded their viewership expectations) which is good for the franchise long term.
I am a bit more inclined to think the affection for GoT will probably manifest in other ways: to various individuals involved with the original show, or via various GoT alum slowly turning back up as nominees for other shows (this seems very likely this year, esp. with The Last of Us).
It also might just not be the right story, at least BCS has interwoven characters, they might have more success with something that is not so far removed time wise from GoT.
I also think you need to give voters time. If they get a series nom or an actor in that’s at least a foot in the door that they can build on to get back in to the Emmy race.
February 9, 2023 at 1:57 am #1205297876look where is Rings of power AKA the most expensive show in history….. that´s embarrassing.
It’s what they deserve.
FYC:
The HBO darlings everywhere (The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Perry Mason, White House Plumbers, Love & Death);
The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);
Poker Face, The Great, The Bear, Evil (especially Katja Herbers) and The Good Fight.Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!
February 9, 2023 at 7:14 am #1205297994If a US premium or streamer picks this up, they could have a drama series Emmy contender on its hands…

February 9, 2023 at 12:50 pm #1205298489I don’t know if it will go to limited or drama, but it looks like we will have Dead Ringers updates soon.
February 9, 2023 at 1:24 pm #1205298533I’m not gonna update my predictions quite yet but I’m starting to get the feeling the Emmys might go all in for the Yellowjackets actresses. Lynskey and Lewis for sure, Cypress is climbing my rankings. Staunton is obviously a shoe-in and the probable winner, especially if the Yellowjackets ladies split the vote. Natasha Lyonne is a wild card to me, she got in for Russian Doll S1 but couldn’t make it for S2 even with a (imo) less competitive field. I’ll still predict her, but as for the last slot, I have it between four:
Bella Ramsey – I’m still not totally sure if they’ll go all in for The Last of Us, and honestly I think they’d go for Pascal, the guest performers, writing and directing before Ramsey.
Emma D’Arcy – At this point I’m doubting the show gets anything above the line besides a Series nom, and even that is slowly falling down my predictions now.
Sharon Horgan – If the Emmys go for Bad Sisters, the last slot is for sure going to her, but I could easily see it getting ignored as many Critics Choice nominees are.
Elisabeth Moss – Of course there’s always the option they just go for a name check. I’m not saying she doesn’t deserve it, but she’s had her run, and there’s more deserving people out there.
So for right now I’ll say:
Tawny Cypress
Juliette Lewis
Melanie Lynskey
Natasha Lyonne
Bella Ramsey
Imelda Staunton
February 9, 2023 at 1:32 pm #1205298542I really like Bella as a person and in a lot of things but I’m not necessarily sure voters will be compelled towards rewarding her either for this performance, although come back to me once the season is over because I think she has it in her. She has a co-lead they can reward and will be perceived as more pressing.
February 9, 2023 at 2:13 pm #1205298577I think Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are easily in IF voters go for The Last of Us, it could be another House of the Dragon for all we know but I doubt it, it’s way more friendly than that and I’m sure both of them will have big scenes still.
They had quite the chemistry on episode 4.FYC:
The HBO darlings everywhere (The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Perry Mason, White House Plumbers, Love & Death);
The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);
Poker Face, The Great, The Bear, Evil (especially Katja Herbers) and The Good Fight.Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!
February 9, 2023 at 2:41 pm #1205298605My take on Drama Series:
1. Succession – Duh.
2. The White Lotus – Won’t just survive, will thrive in the transition between categories.
3. Better Call Saul – This series has had a strange run at the Emmys, but I’m very glad to see that its rapturous final season reception has actually been translating to awards success, at least in nominations. It’ll do quite well.
4. The Last of Us – This would have to flop pretty hard in the coming weeks for me not to consider this a lock after episode 3. Beloved IP, only increasing in popularity, pleasing both fans of the game and new viewers.
5. Yellowjackets – This could end up much lower depending on the reception to the new season (as much as I adore the show, it does feel like something that could get very bad very fast), but the fact that it hit writing/directing/acting last year and the fact that the writers ADORE it makes me think it’ll be safe as long as it maintains quality.
6. The Crown – I do expect this stumble of a season to reflect with a bit of a stumble in overall nomination count, but its slot here is likely still safe after SAG and WGA kept it around. Going from a win to an outright snub would be pretty shocking.
7. Andor – Only putting this closer to the bottom because it’s new, but I’m very, very confident that this is happening. We know the Emmys won’t shy away from Star Wars, and this is actually a very worthy contender. This top 7 feels pretty strong to me.
8. Poker Face – A bit more of a gamble, but people are genuinely liking this show a lot, and the weekly release schedule will only help it over the next month or so. Peacock is still a bit of a red flag, but like others have said, this is looking like their Handmaid’s Tale/Ted Lasso.
————
9. House of the Dragon – This is teetering on the edge, but like others have said, its popularity came and went, and if no one cared enough to nominate it at the major guild awards, will they care again in June? I’m guessing probably not. Could tip over based on its technical category strength, but HBO already has so many strong horses ahead.
10. Bad Sisters – I think this is getting into Writing, and Horgan is probably no lower than 8th. This hasn’t really broken out the way Severance did, but writers could push it over the line a la The Boys.
11. The Handmaid’s Tale – Had such a massive haul in nominations last time that putting it this low feels dumb, but I have not heard anyone even mention this show in months, and after SAG and WGA dropped it, I think the TV Academy will too.
12. The Boys – This has the buzz that The Handmaid’s Tale lacks, but it barely squeaked in in a very weak year. I don’t see it returning in such a strong field.
13. Yellowstone – Still has an outside shot, but those PGA and SAG nods last year seem to have been flukes.
FYC: The Bear (Ayo Edebiri) Industry (Marisa Abela) OMITB (Jayne Houdyshell) Physical (Rose Byrne) WWDITS (Natasia Demetriou)
February 9, 2023 at 2:44 pm #1205298607I don’t know about three Yellowjackets actresses in Lead. I could’ve seen it happening on an unlimited ballot, but less so with six fixed slots. It’s hard to say with its horrible straddle position at SAG, but do actors REALLY like Yellowjackets that much? Cause I’m not sure they do. Feels more likely they’d go for a passion pick like Horgan or Lyonne than fill HALF their lineup with the same show. I think it’s more likely they go for Ambrose in Supporting.

February 9, 2023 at 2:56 pm #1205298614I would love if Ambrose got an emmy nomination out of this (assuming she’s good). She deserved one for every season of Six Feet Under.

Triple lead noms are not the same as triple supporting, they are exceptionally rare. If Yellowjackets catapults to being a top-tier contender and blows up, then I think that’s the time to consider it.
I think the audience for the show is not broad enough to get enough votes for three on a limited ballot – two maybe. As much as we’d like people to watch everything they don’t. (If the show blows up I will change my sentiment)

I’d go as far as saying she should have won for seasons 3 and 5. Her performances in both those finales in particular were phenomenal. The culmination of a season’s worth of character development into something really mature and profound. It was like watching someone you know finally stumble onto a life-changing moment.
Really though that whole ensemble was outstanding from top to bottom. Patricia Clarkson richly deserved both her guest wins but the fact she’s the only actor from the show to win an Emmy for their work on it is… an actual crime lol. The show should have gotten one acting win for each season for at least one different actor like The Sopranos did.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I feel like the show is kind of the equivalent of a supermarket loss leader? (apologies to anyone who didn’t work at a supermarket at some point)
I don’t mean that in a negative way, I just mean the marketing budget around this show is probably more than the show itself so they must be banking on it being a draw to get people to the service generally as well as an awards contender (that spot probably cost $10-15 million).
It has pickup and is probably doing great numbers but nothing is shouting 15 million viewers out the gate or anything.
February 9, 2023 at 4:47 pm #1205298764I’m not entirely sure The White Lotus will blow up in noms like it did in Limited. We have as precendents Big Little Lies and Orange is the New Black as shows changing their category placement.
