January 29, 2023 at 11:22 am #1205273712Are there any major debuts ahead? I feel like The Last of Us was the last one… If that’s the case, then I think the top twelve are as follows:
1. Succession
2. Better Call Saul
3. The White Lotus
4. Andor
5. The Last of Us
6. The Mandalorian
7. Yellowjackets
8. The Crown
9. Bad Sisters
10. House of the Dragon
11. Yellowstone
12. The Good Fight
Idk if you are just listing them or actually ranking but Crown is not 8th come on, it’s doing well enough at the guilds and it’s a show that was always top 4 at worst in every single year it competed.
FYC:
The HBO darlings everywhere (The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Perry Mason, Somebody Somewhere, White House Plumbers, Love & Death);
The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);
Poker Face, The Great, The Bear, Evil (especially Katja Herbers) and The Good Fight.Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!
January 29, 2023 at 11:47 am #1205273766So The White Lotus is officially going in drama instead of limited?

It’s not 100% confirmed, but it’s most likely given Emmy rules and the fact that it was forced to compete in the PGA and SAG as a Drama.

Eh, I’m obviously still predicting it to make it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it lost a bunch of momentum over these next few months and those other shows gained some. I could see a world in which it missed. It would be a huge snub and the talk of the nominations, but it’s a possibility. Fact is, it’s not that great, missing AFI and the Metacritic aggregate for the first time. As for guilds, it got SAG Ensemble and WGA. That’s not incredible. And with the strength of all of those other shows before it in my ranking, there only needs to be one incredible drama in the spring to take The Crown out. So, yes, probably better than 8th currently, but in a few months, 8th may totally suffice.
Once there was only Dark. If you ask me, the Light's winning.

At this point I’m counting down the days to when it is revealed The Last of Us will be competing in comedy because Ellie makes jokes here and there lol.

Dear Edward, possibly The Power at Prime, though I think that will go limited.
Netflix didn’t do upfronts, but Keri Rusell’s The Diplomat is apparently ongoing, but we haven’t had any trailer. There is also Benioff & Weiss’ The Three Body Problem but I’d guess that goes early 2024 cycle*. Both are 2023 calendar releases.
*I’m also fairly sure this has additional cast going under the radar.

It’s going to be interesting to see how (and which awards cycle) Netflix launches these shows. The Three Body Problem will sell itself regardless of whether it is a mess or not just on the genre aspect alone but The Diplomat feels like something that seems to lack a lot of awareness (I wouldn’t know it even exists if it weren’t for this site) and Netflix has had varying degrees of success in promoting those since the pandemic.
Whether either end up being successful or not feels like something that might determine how much Netflix are going to be in the TV awards game once The Crown and Stranger Things end seeing their recent shift already towards the film awards and your occasional limited series here and there.

I’m usually against a series taking the most spots in the same category, but this time I’m going to make an exception. The Last of Us deserved to take almost every spot in the Guest category.

I wish a service that was a bit bigger than Roku had picked this up in the US and ran it (there’s another season this year too) It’s super accessible and Torv and Reid are so damn good in it.

I did find it difficult to navigate around some of the Australian headlines from the 80s even as I was familiar with some of them so I imagine Americans who are totally unfamiliar with international news would probably have struggled more with it but I agree it was a really fun and entertaining show and both Torv and Reid were fantastic. The former should have been nominated at the International Emmys last year (especially seeing what ended up getting nominated there instead…) and it was quite jarring watching Reid in The Newsreader and then in Interview with the Vampire weeks later lol. Incredible range.
