Oh my god, Clayton Davis is predicting F. Murray Abraham to win supporting actor…
to be fair, I think he would win under the tape system.

Lol what
March 23, 2023 at 1:19 pm #1205361544Oh my god, this performance was Emmy nominated, I’d forgotten all about that tragedy.
People may hate her character and the show but she acted her ass off and was a deserving nod unlike her nomination for The White Lotus.
"EGOT" and "Triple Crown of Acting" winner: VIOLA DAVIS!!!!

I actually think The White Lotus wouldn’t very fare very well with the tape system in the acting categories (Coolidge excluded although I do think she would suffer too from potential being a bit too comedic). The acting style on the show reminds me a lot of something like Mad Men where it’s just a bit too cold and the tape system tended to prefer much showier and emotive forms of acting. I think Succession would have had a similar issue with the tape system too.
Obviously we haven’t seen two of the contenders in the top eight of the odds yet but I think if that was our supporting actor lineup then Giancarlo Esposito would probably have been the frontrunner under the tape system. Not only is her very prominent on both his tapes (and has a very showy performance in “Point and Shoot”) but with Banks nominated could have benefitted from being on his tape and having his performance being seen twice in this category. John Lithgow would have also stood a decent shot as he’s essentially a co-lead to Bridges in The Old Man and just like Laura Linney he used to thrive under the tape system.

With the tape system a couple of voters were selected to watch each nominees’ tape and vote based on it. That’s why people from procedurals with a strong episode like Mariska Hartigay, Patricia Arquette or Kyra Sedgwick were able to win over people with better season arc (like Margulies for the first season of The Good Wife). Now everyone from the acting branch vote for the winner.

Very well explained, but just to clarify for the poster who asked it wouldn’t actually be a couple people, it would be a jury of I believe 6-10.
March 23, 2023 at 2:37 pm #1205361645No one takes Clayton Davis seriously. You’d have more accurate predictions if you ranked them blindfolded.
March 23, 2023 at 3:13 pm #1205361682Get ready to return to Happy Valley one last time: The drama’s third and final season will premiere Monday, May 22, across Acorn TV, AMC+ and BBC America (at 10/9c), with a new episode debuting weekly.
Is this eligible for primetime Emmy? I know if it is it’s going next year.

One Emmy winner speaking to two future Emmy winners wbk!
March 23, 2023 at 3:37 pm #1205361707My tentative writing and directing predictions…
I know that I should probably be predicting more than one episode for Better Call Saul, but I really REALLY want Bad Sisters to make it, so I’m admittedly hope-dicting a bit (and taking out any of the other contenders feels like a dumb move). And Horgan has overcome the odds for a writing nom before!
I know BCS has had way more misses than hits in directing, but I think this season will pull through on acclaim/hype alone.
There’s a good chance I have The Crown’s performance all switched up, but the fact that the WGA kept series like Maisel, Kimmy Schmidt, and GLOW past their Emmy expiration date makes me think that its writing nod is still on shakier ground, while the Emmy directors tend to cling a little longer to their former winners (notable that The Crown has won that category twice now).

March 23, 2023 at 3:58 pm #1205361730As someone who would definitely nominate multiple episodes of this season for writing, I’m not sure I really see Better Call Saul getting more than one writing nomination anyway. If they couldn’t get multiple nods for any of the other seasons (with the exception of season 5 which they had extenuating circumstances with both the episodes nominated receiving equal critical acclaim and essentially being a two parter) under the unlimited ballot then why would they get more than one now with the restricted ballot in a competitive writing field? “Rock and Hard Place” received a lot of acclaim as an episode last year and they still couldn’t bring it along for the ride in spite of the show over-performing overall. I think “Saul Gone” is the clear choice for the writers this year with it not only being the show’s finale and most acclaimed episode but also it being its most writer-y.

March 23, 2023 at 9:36 pm #1205362033The Bad Sisters finale…
What an EPISODE!!! Firmly rooting for Anne-Marie Duff for the Emmy (and DEFINITELY the BAFTA) now…

March 23, 2023 at 9:41 pm #1205362037Pedro was great in Last of Us, but it has to be going to Cox or Strong. I just think that it being the final season really puts either one as the frontrunner. And that aspect also takes away one of Odenkirk’s advantages.
Bella has a great chance to take Actress. It is hard to see who the main challenger is. I think the popularity of the show really helps when it comes to looking at the other potential winners. Still think Yellowjackets being on Showtime doesn’t help it much, even with the integration with Paramount Plus. The Crown had one of its weakest year’s and I think that hurts Imelda Staunton’s chances.
March 23, 2023 at 9:57 pm #1205362041I wouldn’t bet against HBO taking all the acting wins in this category.
Lead Actor: Jeremy Strong (or Brian Cox)
Lead Actress: Bella Ramsey
Supporting Actor: Kieran Culkin (or Matthew MacFadyen)
Supporting Actress: Jennifer Coolidge (or Sarah Snook)
Probably both in guest too.
