I think the idol will be terribly written, but that didn’t hurt euphoria so idk
March 25, 2023 at 11:43 am #1205363581I was wondering if Toni Collette had a small chance of sneaking in, but Amazon haven’t even listed The Power on their FYC page…

Even worse they had it on their FYC page and then removed it…

March 25, 2023 at 2:49 pm #1205363708I’m predicting a Return-of-the-King-esque sweep for BCS.
March 25, 2023 at 3:34 pm #1205363743In my opinion The Idol’s biggest hurdle will be the total lack of acting talent from Depp and the Weekend. Sorry but after watching the trailer I can’t see how critics or voters could buy them as “actors”

Euphoria had at least a strong cast, both The Idol leads looked awful in the trailer.
"EGOT" and "Triple Crown of Acting" winner: VIOLA DAVIS!!!!
March 25, 2023 at 4:15 pm #1205363772Finished Andor and it’s currently my Series winner 💀 I wasn’t expecting this level of writing at all – I was just catching on shows I hadn’t watched due to film season taking up my time.
Its difficult to expand on what has already been said by its fans (a journalist I follow describes it as “an incredible show about revolutionary struggle, imperialist extraction, and the transformative power of solidarity”), but I’d like to add that I’m doing this, the show impressively subverts the current television landscape. A lot of the shows and films critiquing contemporary power structures (usually by examining the banality of rich people – see Succession, The White Lotus, The Menu, Triangle of Sadness – to name a few) fail to truly articulate the root causes of the issues we currently face as a collective. I’m not saying that Andor is identically tackling the same themes as the examples listed, but it’s refreshing to see the dismantling of societal power structures reflected on screen in such a universal and entertaining way. This is vital television, and who knew Star Wars would be its vehicle.
O’Reilly, Shaw, Serkis and Skarsgard all deserve nominations, but the quality of performances given by almost the entire cast is high (Lesser is fantastic in a small role well within his wheelhouse). While I don’t think his work warrants a nomination, Luna is a compelling lead. It of course deserves Writing and Directing nominations. Looking forward to seeing what Succession brings now.
FYC: Danielle Deadwyler, Best Actress in a Leading Role

Depending on how this is adapted it has the potential to be somewhat controversial/provocative so I can see them holding on whether that’s worth campaigning.
I would imagine a lot of the BTS drama was around how far to go with the premise.
March 25, 2023 at 5:15 pm #1205363815I’m predicting a Return-of-the-King-esque sweep for BCS.
feels like if we were to compare universes, a more apt comparison would be hobbit 3.
March 25, 2023 at 5:59 pm #1205363842I think the issue with House of the Dragon, is there is clearly an issue with House of the Dragon. It’s absence from all the major guilds proves that.
I’m not even sure it’s the series, it’s an arrogant campaign that pit itself in touting itself as a better more evolved version of Game of Thrones, which is a really weird thing to do towards a show that won drama series even for a highly controversial mixed reaction season. It gets you Reddit points but I don’t think it wins you many with the industry who know what an undertaking that show was to make.
March 25, 2023 at 6:04 pm #1205363844But if that’s the case we surely have to consider LOTR: Rings of Power just as strongly as we consider HotD. Sure HotD is the better acted series, but the ensemble shut out at SAG shows acting won’t really be the reason for its potential inclusion. Like The Mandalorian it will get in as a big tech player. So again, what necessarily makes it more likely as HBO’s fourth priority over RoP as Amazon’s first priority? (For the record I prefer HotD)
The Rings of Power would be more tempting on an unlimited ballot but I just can’t see it getting in on a restricted ballot. Not only was the show incredibly divisive but it also heavily under-performed at the winter awards missing nominations at key guilds like the ASC (in spite of having very flashy cinematographer) and the makeup and hairstylists. It also was completely shut out with the below the line craftspeople at BAFTA whilst Andor, House of the Dragon, Wednesday and even The Sandman all received nominations. Whilst it will do decently below the line there just doesn’t feel like much to be passionate about. House of the Dragon is weak for all the reasons that have already been outlined in this thread but it has the prestige of the HBO brand which I think gives it an edge over TROP (something that is arguably exemplified by it winning the drama series at the Golden Globes whilst the latter got snubbed in spire of the body’s Amazon bias).
Ultimately though I don’t have either getting the last slot in series and have Bad Sisters in there instead and honestly, I’m feeling increasingly confident about that. One of the counter-arguments that have been made about it making the cut is that it could easily just be an actress + maybe writing play like Unreal, Masters of Sex and Killing Eve were but both of those shows would have made the cut in 8 slot lineups. Ultimately it has critical support that none of the other shows vying for a spot currently have, has a better shot at getting writing and acting nominations than the genre shows and also just really feels like the type of show that people in Hollywood recommend to their friends behind closed doors that we tend to see show up a lot. Pen15, What We Do in the Shadows, Bodyguard, even to an extent Yellowjackets and Station Eleven. It’s hard to ignore the support a WGA nominated show that the industry likes of Ryan Reynolds, Carrie Preston, Lena Headey, Natasha Lyonne, Rhea Seehorn, Dan Levy, Samantha Morton among others have raved about online.
The Killing Eve breakout year is actually what I’m using as a comparison in my drama series predictions this year. I can see Succession being the unbeatable titan like GoT was that year, The White Lotus being the casting, acting and directing winner that comes close to taking series like The Crown was that year, Better Call Saul being the critically raved final season that explodes like The Americans (although I think it will do so in nominations as opposed to wins like the latter did), Andor and The Last of Us being the genre shows that factor above the line, The Crown and Yellowjackets being the industry favourites that get nominations but are only win competitive for an acting category or two like The Handmaid’s Tale and This is Us and The Old Man being the breakout show with Golden Globe and SAG acting nominations that gets into acting and a couple of crafts like Ozark (although I don’t see The Old Man getting into directing like Ozark did) and nothing else.

Are we sure The Rings of Power was eligible there? Very large portions of the creatives are from New Zealand and half the cast are American or Australian.
March 25, 2023 at 9:43 pm #1205363937Just realized I don’t have any andor actors in my prediction and I’m going to predict it for Series, writing and directing…Surely of it has that much passion, it should be able to get at least one actor in, right?….Might slot in Luna for that 6th slot now tbh

I think it can get into series, writing and directing without any acting nominations, but I am expecting it to get into guest actor and actress (if Shaw is pushed there). I don’t think I see it for Luna, but he is in 6-8 range for me right now. He’s good but I feel like the role requires him to observe more than react if that makes any sense. Rhys is my #6 atm.

I think this is pretty realistic – this would mirror The Mandalorian that just got a guest nom for Esposito and a voice nom for Waititi.
