I wonder if HotD will be like The Morning Show where it gets several above the line nominations but still misses in Series.
I really think Considine can get a nod, but I can’t see any of the supporting actors getting in unless the 3 supporting actresses end up moving to lead (and I still wouldn’t be that confident)
also, if The Diplomat ends up being strong or if at least one of Seehorn/Snook/Debicki moves to lead, I don’t think D’Arcy is getting in either

Despite not really liking HotD (or GoT, for that matter) all that much, I actually really hope Considine gets in. He was my favorite actor of the episodes I saw and would be a very deserving nom, imo.

April 1, 2023 at 7:25 pm #1205373889Fair point. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the show (only got to like the 4th episode, I think?), but it’s still really surprising to me how poorly it did with the guilds. Maybe award shows just don’t like awarding prequels to popular Emmy winners…
Without re-iterating some of my feelings re why they’ve not responded well, on a basic level there is such a high level of turnover ATL and BTL that there is no loyalty to a particular creative or actor. From a marketing and public standpoint it’s a prequel. From a behind the scenes perspective it is a totally different show.

It will annoy me if Ford and Mirren get in for 1923 as for me it will be more name checking when 1883 was the by far superior product and delivered no acting noms

I guess i have them this high because of Elliott’s SAG win, actors might be warming up to the franchise, or it could just be a SAG thing like Boardwalk Empire was for must of it’s run.

This is very, very similar to mine. Only real difference is I’d have a Succession actor (probably Strong) winning lead actor.
April 1, 2023 at 9:23 pm #1205374086I do think people are underestimating Mirren in general. In the past 24 years the only shows she hasn’t received awards attention for were a guest performance on an NBC procedural and an appearance in a flop Amazon anthology series. Even a massive dud like Catherine the Great still netted her a Golden Globe nomination in a competitive year. Her show seems to be a bona-fide audience hit (it just debuted strong after its finale on the Nielsen charts this week in a currently competitive streaming climate), Costner’s Golden Globe win and Eliott’s SAG win could show that in spite of Yellowstone‘s Emmy shut out last year there is a lot of goodwill for the universe amongst awards bodies and this show feels like the most awards friendly of the lot but most importantly this is a weak field this year and she’s someone who definitely has the clout to get carried along as a result of it. Whether voters will resort to name-checks still with the restricted ballot or not remains to be seen but she could very well be like Edie Falco or Sandra Oh who has a very strong base who just follows her wherever she goes and pushes her over the line whenever the field allows it. A lot of us, myself very much included, are presuming that with the lack of options in this category voters when trying to fill out their ballots will resort to checking off people in shows they may have seen but weren’t too passionate about like the other Yellowjackets women or Moss but it’s very possible the opposite happens and they just check off two or three performances and call it a day giving extra weight to ballots that do have people like say Mirren on them.
Likewise I imagine if this show was eligible at the winter awards she would have probably gotten in at the Globes and Critics Choice. I don’t think she’s a lock or anything or that everyone must predict her but she’s definitely top 10 and on the surface imo irrespective of whether this show can factor outside of her or not (I don’t really think Harrison Ford will be a thing regardless of how wide open the last spot in drama actor is, especially seeing a lot of voters will probably already be checking him off for Shrinking anyway).
Solidarity with the striking writers. Pay them the wages they are owed for bringing us the content we are all on here because of!
April 1, 2023 at 9:35 pm #1205374090The field is super barren and Mirren is beloved, she could definitely sneak in.
If she doesn’t tho I would take it as the Emmys being totally aware of the Yellowstone universe, but never caring for it.He lives in you, he lives in me, he watches over everything we see.

I did not watch the show, but people told me it’s hella political (in a good way), with parallels of our current society with a dystopian world. Sounds like a killer.

Likewise but mine is Cox.
April 1, 2023 at 10:46 pm #1205374120the most impressive tv ratings stability for a network comedy this season is ghosts. when most network shows are falling double digits, it’s stable; even more impressive given that it’s a sophomore show

My honest opinion on Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, outside of any discussion on who watches the show and how that aligns is they are extremely well made shows high production shows in a way that isn’t highly reliant on excessive VFX.
You can debate on whether they are Peak or Prestige TV but they sure look like it and the craftspeople that work on the shows care. Janie Bryant’s work on 1883 is just as good as some of her Mad Men and Deadwood work, for instance.
