January 11, 2023 at 2:30 am #1205234536Would The White Lotus take over House of the Dragon in drama?

January 11, 2023 at 3:20 am #1205234589Everything about Jennifer Coolidge last night was completely and utterly perfect. An absolutely deserved win and a perfect, heartfelt speech.
Tyler James Williams winning was another highlight, because he is fantastic on Abbott and I was very concerned he would never get his due for his work on the show. Just kicking myself that I switched off of him last minute.

Longform went to form, with the biggest surprise being Hauser in his race and I wasn’t really thrilled with that win or speech. Comedy went for Abbott Elementary in a big way, but not big enough to give us another SLR speech. And the drama categories ended up being full of surprises, as the HFPA finally seems to have moved away from The Crown and honored a wild range of shows and networks instead.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 11, 2023 at 3:33 am #1205234603I’m surprised people are surprised The Crown didn’t win anything. The HFPA don’t tend to award older shows unless there’s an urgency behind them (last year they didn’t even give comedy series to Ted Lasso over Hacks) and they didn’t have a performer like with Colman in season 3 who just had so much individual buzz as an actor. It was always going to be either one acting win or nothing (I regret switching from Zendaya to Staunton after I logged on after my break).
I’m actually more surprised overall by the direction the drama categories went in. House of the Dragon in particular winning drama series surprised me seeing how resistant they are to genre even though it’s the shiny new toy (I thought Severance had more potential to be the lone series winner this year). Will be interesting to see how the guilds go (what a strange and exciting drama category this season).

Watching the show on TV like the rest of Hollywood’s awards correspondents — whom the HFPA decided to exclude from their event because they disliked our coverage of their recent controversies and blame it on our membership in the Critics Choice Association, which puts on the Critics Choice Awards — I felt like the show was hit and miss.

The pettiness these two organisations had against each other was funny but now it’s just so boring and eye-rolling to read about.

It’s why I am really inclined to be a bit wary of what both of them do here. The press posturing has been really unimpressive of recent times and isn’t necessarily aligning that well with early guilds.
I’ve no real issues with individual winners or nominees for the most part but there’s too much playing all sorts of politics. SAG is 10x more important for me in actually working out where we’re at.

It wasn’t predicted to win anything according to the odds, so this shut out shouldn’t surprise anyone. I had Debicki cause I knew Sheryl would be in danger here with Janelle nominated. Garner was a surprising upset, considering they overlooked her for season 3, but I guess after 3 Emmy wins they had to give her a win as well.

It’s so funny because before I went on my Christmas break I had a feeling Garner could win but then I think I moved her down to last after I returned 💀.

January 11, 2023 at 4:01 am #1205234647It’s interesting how despite it being the HFPA Abbott and Yellowstone in particular are such domestic-skewing shows/winners.
