9-1-1 and the Emmys

Year after year, I find it strange that this series, and especially the performances seen in the series, do not register for the Emmy voters.

Angela Bassett in particular, is just mesmerizing as Athena Grant, and both Jennifer Love-Hevitt & Aisha Hinds have great material each season. I think all three women and many more cast members has been outstanding all the way through the series.

It has good ratings, visually stunning episodes (the fact that it cannot even hit the creative categories is quite silly), quality content, excellent acting performances, and cathartic moments, but for some reason the series is just simply not an award success. It was even created by Emmy-magnet Ryan Murphy, but nada.

It’s quite disappointing, to be honest. But what could be the reason behind it all?

I don’t know? Maybe they saw it was a procedural network show and gave up before trying.

I do love the show, Bassett should be a winner for it and Peter Krause was also outstanding when he was focus on early seasons.

And yes, JLH should’ve WON for her episode with her ex husband.

If we were in 2002 I could see it being a huge hit at the Emmys, because they loved this kind of procedural stuff.

But right now I feel like there are too many shows like this (Thank you Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago Fire for your 500 spin offs) and the novelty of it has been lost.

I find the show to be very watchable, however, some poor writing choices might have kept it away from any awards support. For a network television show with questionable writing quality to break through at the Emmys, the performance must be completely undeniable, and even though I agree that Bassett and Hinds are great in it, it’s not like they have the same praise that someone like Viola Davis or Kerry Washington used to have in their respective shows.

I like things about 9-1-1. Bassett in particular is quite strong and I’ve grown to like Oliver Stark quite a bit. I don’t enjoy Jennifer Love Hewitt at all but that’s besides the point. I think the reality of being a network procedural is that there are more episodes and therefore more clunkers. And also, its storytelling aiming is not very high. It’s mostly case of the week stories and, while sometimes good, it doesn’t match the storytelling ambitions of even some of the more uneven awards players.

These types of shows will prob never come near the Emmys again. As someone mentioned, it would have prob done well 15 years ago, but the landscape has completely evolved. I always found Bassett to be amazing in this but think the show is pretty messy outside of her performance.

But, you know, there is no respect for network dramas other than TIU. As you would probably agree, Piper, HTGAWM had a ton of worthy performances that were never recognized. :/ The fact that Viola and Cicely got 5 noms each for playing those roles is a miracle, if you think about it.

Only watched the first season because ultimately it was too much of a procedural for me to watch regularly but I thought it was pretty fun and efficient. I’m not surprised it’s still one of network’s TV best rated shows. As mentioned above Bassett was great and it was indeed worthy of some tech noms because they did some impressive stuff (like buildings falling, tsunami etc.) and it didn’t look cheap.

I just think it’s the network procedural-ness of it all. I agree Bassett is particularly strong.

I think the days of network dramas are numbered at the Emmys, I’m not entirely sure procedurals are but they need a streamer to have the confidence to create and promote one from scratch with confidence. I’d argue if anyone has the lead here it’s probably Paramount+.

Hargitay and Meloni finally got nominated in seasons 5 and 7. So there’s still hope. But like everybody has said, it’s not the early 2000s anymore and the Drama categories are very much (or 100% if it weren’t for This is Us, right?) reserved for cable and streaming shows now. So I don’t think anybody is looking around on Fox or CBS for drama nominees anymore.

They need buzz and press for this to ever happen. I recall that’s how Hargitay finally entered the conversation, and it started at SAG, not the Emmys.

Yep, since 2015, excluding TIU, only three network dramas have been nominated period (The Good Wife, How to Get Away with Murder and Empire) and 2/3 were based solely on the universally beloved undeniable performances of their leads.

Kinda related but been bingeing the Lone Star spin-off and Gina Torres has a bottle(ish) episode near the end of S2 and is phenomenal in it. If this was 2006 she should’ve absolutely been an Emmy contender (possible winner).

(And just general other great moments of hers in S2)

I do find it interesting how when we all discuss Ryan Murphy’s success, none of us ever even think of this show (probably because this an awards site ofc). But this ranked 8th on all of network TV last season and third if you only include fictional shows. Kind of incredible, especially with how over saturated the procedural market already is, although I’m sure I’ll be called a stan for saying so lol.
