Assuming Ava’s going to get her own centric episode coming up, because it’s strange how little screen time/comedic content she’s being given this season as opposed to last.

ReplyCopy URLOctober 19, 2022 at 6:47 pm #1205126394Abbott still keeps up the high standard it set. This episode was really funny. One thing I noticed is that Sheryl Lee Ralph has been getting more material than Janelle James this season. James used to always have a hilarious line each episode, but seems like it shifted to Ralph who always has a standout scene. I feel like any episode can be Ralph’s clip so far. I wonder if James would get a showcase episode.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 20, 2022 at 6:59 am #1205126671Enjoyable episode, but the juice storyline was the definition of filler and the kind of thing that I expected would happen with a 22-episode season order. Standout scenework from Sheryl Lee Ralph though. Let’s just accept that Barbara will always be right about everything school-related, deal? Also liking that Lisa Ann Walter is getting more material to work with. I’m fully expecting an explosion in Emmy nominations next year, and it’s not far-fetched that the entire core ensemble could get nominated. That’s something I wasn’t counting on last season. I never wavered on dual supporting actress nods or lead actress, but not TJW in supporting actor. This time, I think the net can extend to Chris Perfetti and Walter. Agree that Janelle James needs more to do, stat, but she kills anything she’s given. Please team up Ava and Ashley in future episodes! It seems like a logical progression that Ava will need some kind of partner-in-crime for more hijinks.

I agree, the episode was enjoyable as always but probably is my least favorite one so far. Hopefully Ava does have her own episode soon because she’s hasn’t had much joke material to deliver just yet.

October 20, 2022 at 9:36 am #1205126873Interesting it hasn’t come off to me that James has any less to do this season. I wonder if it’s maybe that last season she was so divorced from any of the day to day running the classroom storylines, whereas now she’s much more involved in those. Last season she would pop up to say a couple hilarious things and then peace out, whereas this season the character is just a touch more muted, and more directly involved in the a+b plots of each episode. Her appearances may have been more impactful last season, but I haven’t felt like she has any less to do, and if anything it’s kind of nice to see that James can also do the slightly lower-key stuff rather than just being the wild card.
EDIT: Definitely does feel like Ralph has a ton MORE to do though, like to the point where if I didn’t know this was impossible because they’d already filmed half the season I would say it was a direct response to her emmy win

ReplyCopy URLOctober 27, 2022 at 9:44 am #1205134310Idk what this says about my brain lol but the whole time watching the episode I was thinking about how this will be a great directing submission next year. They do a lot more with the camera this episode than they’ve ever done before and it’s all really fun.

October 28, 2022 at 9:50 pm #1205135945This show is excellent! The writing, the acting, the direction, etc.
I can see a slew of Emmy nominations next year with all of the main actors getting in, including William Stanford Davis. This Halloween episode could be a great submission for him.
