Now this is the Ava that I’ve been waiting for! This is definitely Janelle’s episode so far in the season. The jokes got me smiling and laughing a lot which was somewhat missing from previous episodes. She’s actually great when she’s with the kids, I found their interactions so funny. Also, loved that they’re including music again, especially “Pick Up Your Feelings” by Jazmine Sullivan, mhm yes!

Finally Janelle James had some material and she was able to recapture her brilliant Performance from the first season while feeling listless so far throughout the second. Let’s hope this is not a one off episode for her and gets put in the background again. Let’s hope she will continue to have this amazing material for the rest of the season

Let me start by saying I do love Jannelle James and her performance as Ava. But I’m still fine with her being used judiciously. I don’t want her to get Kramer-ed and be used too much in too many over the top situations. I still think Sheryl Lee Ralph is the best on the show.

I loved last night, as I have loved this whole season. I know some think Janine is annoying and too much. If you have ever worked with someone like that, you know just how realistic it is haha. I have worked with young folks who come in with lots of knowledge and energy and Janine and Jacob are just like them. The folks that have been there a while are just like Barb and Melissa as well haha. I usually fit more in the Gregory mold.

Janelle James hasn’t been properly utilized this season like last year’s breakthrough performance, so this showcase was one of my favorites of the season so far, and probably up there with the classic Halloween episode. Janine’s grating antics usually run more comedic than annoying to me, but having her eating a rancid tuna melt was just plain stupidity. I’d rather have her the former than outright the latter. Gregory’s exasperation with Ava’s poor teaching methods and concern for Janine was well-played, and Jacob sticking up for his girl in the break room was great too. But absolutely bring back that over-it teacher who can’t stand Janine lol. I need to see more teachers at this large public school besides the core five, and there’s so much future potential for guest stars and such.

Janelle James was brilliant but I actually felt like this was the weakest episode of the season so far. All those scenes with Janine at home sick felt really unnecessary and underserved both the show’s mockumentary format and the episode’s potential for being a brilliant standalone episode of television. Still lots of fun though!

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I was thinking about James and I think the difficulty is that most of the performances are quite grounded and you run the risk of her being a caricature if you over use her.

As hilarious as she was last season I did think at times she felt a bit like a comedian playing a principal rather than someone actually in that role (as opposed to say Ralph whose performance is quite realistic), and that could end up undercutting themes of the show if they don’t use it judiciously.

    So many thoughts!

First, Janine and Gregory should’ve kissed ugh. This slow burn is killing me lol, and now Gregory’s friend is up in Janine’s business. Just can’t catch a break between these two becoming a couple lmao. Of course Ava would have basketball superstar as a boyfriend, but she was turning up at the club, mhm! Nice side story for the rest of the main cast, Stanford Davis actually had some good moments!
Overall, a fun holiday episode, and now we wait until next year for Abbott.

Lively holiday episode. Not one of my favorites, but cute. Everyone needs a friend like Erika, BTW. More of Courtney Taylor in future episodes, plz! Fun fact about the holiday cookies that Janine passed out to her class: they represented different religious traditions that the children recognized, like Judaism and Kwanzaa, including one blank, frosted cookie for a student who is a Jehovah’s Witness. This is the religious tradition that Quinta Brunson was raised in, which she’s spoken about in multiple interviews.

I think this was my favorite episode of the season so far, and a very significant one in the arc of the show. They way they balanced the two central storylines and provided unexpected combinations of characters was really well handled and it was one of the funniest of the season for me. I actually think this was James’s best episode of the season. The Ava-sub storyline was much more about the characters growth than wacky situations so she didn’t get to be as funny as I was hoping. I also definitely think this could be a writing emmy winner next year.

First, Janine and Gregory should’ve kissed ugh.

Yeah no, I get that they have chemistry and we’re all rooting for them, but making Gregory cheat and Janine going along with it would be a slap in the face of both of their writing so far, I actually hated the “wow they almost kissed” thing.
I hope they don’t Ross and Rachel this couple, but it kinda seems they’re going it that way.

Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!

LOVED this episode. Lisa Ann Walter was brilliant and I think this is perhaps the funniest episode of the series for Brunson, for me. Great start after the holiday break.

2023 off to an amazing start already, loved this episode. The scene with Melissa and her student made me so emotional.
