But also to add I think the season has got a lot stronger (as is normal) in later episodes. Like the character Tariq is lowkey just absolutely hilarious. Also the Jacob character became much funnier and more interesting from episode 7 or 8 onward. Melissa became more likeable too but she’s still a full on cliche.

March 10, 2022 at 10:34 am #1204839673Such a lovely group of characters and the show is very funny. Janelle/Ava is indeed the funiest part of the show, she remindes me Chelse Peretti in Brooklyn Nine Nine. But the real MVP for me is Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 10, 2022 at 11:28 am #1204839744Totally agree Sheryl Lee Ralph steals the show. It’s an understated performance in comparison to Janelle James, but she’s funny, lived-in, and brings such depth and gravitas. I’d definitely give her an Emmy nom in this eight-person line-up.

I agree on all of this David. Janelle James makes me laugh and she does it well. But Sheryl Lee Ralph has the better overall performance, mainly because she’s Sheryl Lee Ralph and is awesome. I just want the Emmy’s to shower this show with some well-deserved love. Heck, bump the SNL folks and nominate both awesome ladies I say!
ReplyCopy URLMarch 10, 2022 at 5:04 pm #1204840282Yes, Sheryl Lee Ralph is pretty freakin magnificent in this show, as is Janelle James! I think there is room for both to be nominated! ESPECIALLY if the buzz for this show continues on this path!!

March 24, 2022 at 6:00 am #1204873216I started watching this fairly a few weeks ago and it’s one of best series I’ve seen a while.

So good, the show keeps getting better! And Gregory is finally a person. Though I thought the previous episode, “Step Class,” was Janelle James’ best episode in terms of combining comedy with character development.

When the students start participating in a new online trend that causes disruption to the school, the teachers band together to put an end to it; Mr. Johnson provides comforting life advice to Gregory; the teachers finally meet Jacob’s boyfriend.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 31, 2022 at 2:16 pm #1204891835Ava verbally being surprised Jacob’s boyfriend is black and then the boyfriend turning around and saying “it’s pronounced Zack” – I fell off my chair.
