Ava verbally being surprised Jacob’s boyfriend is black and then the boyfriend turning around and saying “it’s pronounced Zack” – I fell off my chair.
Him immediately following it up with “You must be Ava” took me out.
Jacob’s been telling him all of the workplace shenanigans.

ReplyCopy URLApril 7, 2022 at 10:01 pm #1204908292Just watched the first two episodes. Quinta Brunson is the TRUTH! What a serve for the flailing state of network television! Janelle James steals every single scene she in, so I need her Emmy-nominated like today. Such a lively ensemble and a premise that can be easily sustained for so many seasons (smart move there, Miss Q!). Hopefully the writing maintains at this high level for the rest of the season. Excited to see more!

Not only does it maintain, it gets even stronger.

I have such respect for Brunson with this show because I think she’s used the obvious network TV guidelines, and boundaries (commercial breaks, budget, format) in a way where they work to her advantage. Traditional doesn’t have to mean bad.

April 13, 2022 at 6:10 am #1204915369This show is AMAZING! I’m already excited for season 2. I really hope this show gets some Emmy love.
ReplyCopy URLApril 13, 2022 at 11:17 am #1204915699Through “Desking” currently. The smart Emmy move is to submit the pilot for everything, but this episode, wow! It encapsulates everything this season’s been building up to in such a clever, writerly manner that should at least be submitted for writing. I think it’s strong enough to get in on its own and not take votes away from the pilot. The network bias is all that’s really holding it back. Hope that’s not a thing this year!

Quinta Brunson’s breakout ABC series might change the way we watch TV comedies.
https://www.vulture.com/article/how-abbott-elementary-reinvigorated-the-network-sitcom.htmlArticle might be paywalled, but the moral of the story is, this show is a HIT in every sense of the word, particularly for our fragmented, delayed-viewing era.
