What do we all think will get nominated as the 10 Programs of the Year?

My current thoughts (2021 Emmy eligible seasons in bold) :

– Better Call Saul (AMC)
The Crown (Netflix)
– Dead to Me (Netflix)
– The Great (Hulu)
– Insecure (HBO)
– Mrs. America (FX on Hulu)
– Ozark (Netflix)
– The Undoing (HBO)
– Unorthodox (Netflix)
– What We Do in the Shadows (FX)

Solidarity with the striking writers. Pay them the wages they are owed for bringing us the content we are all on here because of!

I May Destroy You, Normal People and Schitt’s Creek are ineligible. I’m 95% sure of that.

Unorthodox is very foreign, but I think is american show still.

Unorthodox is classified as American-German.

I’m guessing Schitt’s or I May Destroy You wins the Special Award given to Fleabag last year?

I May Destroy You certanly will not.

Schitt’s Creek is a possibility, however that Special Award is a very rare thing. It needs to be something that really blows up.

The only times, since the very first AFI Awards (2001), the special award was given to a foreign production were:

Film (The King’s Speech, The Artist, Harry Potter, Roma and Parasite)

Television (Fleabag)

If SC really does well at the Emmys I think it can get in. But again it’s freaking super rare.

Why aren’t you predicting Better Call Saul?

The only time they were snubbed here was for the 3rd season, but that was a very competitive year. This year they had their buzziest season to date and the competition isn’t that big.

It is certanly above shows like The Boys.

Lovecraft Country is not happening here.

They like new shows. black-ish, Empire, UnREAL, Watchmen, This Is Us, Atlanta etc all got nominated here.

I also think you’re underestimating how much buzz Lovecraft has. I would say its the buzziest new show of the year.

Lovecraft Country is not happening here.

There’s always at least 1 new show in their selection (not including miniseries or TV movies).

2009 — 3 (Glee, No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, Patty Down)
2010 — 3 (Boardwalk Empire, The Big C, The Walking Dead)
2011 — 2 (Game of Thrones, Homeland)
2012 — 1 (Girls)
2013 — 4 (The Americans, House of Cards, Masters of Sex, Orange is the New Black)
2014 — 5 (How to Get Away with Murder, Jane the Virgin, The Knick, Silicon Valley, Transparent)
2015 — 5 (Better Call Saul, Empire, Master of None, Mr. Robot, UnReal)
2016 — 4/5 (Atlanta, American Crime Story, Stranger Things, The Crown, This Is Us)
2017 — 1/2 (Big Little Lies, The Handmaid’s Tale)
2018 — 4 (Barry, Kominsky Method, Pose, Succession)
2019 — 1 (Watchmen)

Look at the other new shows nominated here. You don’t need to have the strongest buzz of the year. However, I think Lovecraft has a considerably amount of buzz. And I’ll say again: critics gave 79 for the first five episodes on MC. We should worry about critical reception only after the 6th episode because so far they are safe (critical wise).

I’m predicting Fargo because I believe this season will deliver and, of course, because they are airing at the perfect time for AFI. There’s not too much to watch on tv right now so I think many people will tune in to watch Fargo. Also, I believe the third season wasn’t nominated because it got overshadowed by Big Little Lies and Feud + Dispite being well acclaimed, some people didn’t liked as much as the other two first seasons. This year the only big miniseries we had so far was Mrs. America.

It’s so funny how earlier on in the thread we were arguing over whether Fargo or The Undoing would be the show that gets picked by AFI as Program of the Year that was a Limited Series from the winter awards season and now it looks like neither will get picked (unless The Undoing continues to be a big audience hit and improve in critical acclaim although I doubt the latter).

Changes in bold.

– The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix)
