For a period, Animated Programs that ran more than one hour competed in a separate category. After 2009, though, more than one hour submissions were merged with the half-hour submissions into one category. I always assumed that meant both types of animated programs were on the same playing field. Looking over the Primetime Emmy rules, though, I found this note:

“The nomination slots in the Animated Program category have two tracks – half-hour programs and hour or more programs. The number of nominations will be proportionate according to the entries received for each track with the caveat that there will always be one slot reserved for the highest votegetter among the hour or more programs, if there is a minimum of three entries for a given track. However, if there are zero votes in the one hour or more track, all nominees will emerge from the half-hour track.”

I don’t entirely get what this means or how they define “track.” From what I understand, though, it seems like they save one slot for an hour or more submission if there are at least three entries. If an hour or more submission gets enough votes, it fills that spot. if not, it’s five half-hour nominees. Is that right or can somebody better explain to me?

    Thanks,

    Nick

“Track” is just another word for “group” in this case. I think you have it right, except that, instead of needing “enough” votes, an hour-long show needs only one vote to be nominated (if there are three or more hour-long shows entered and it is the only one of them to get any votes at all).

What I want to know is, were there any hour-long programs entered?

This year, it doesn’t look like it. Although, it probably helped submissions like Over the Garden Wall in years past.
