HBO Max is officially entering Love Life, although they have not finalized whether they are submitting it in limited or comedy. It is an anthology in the vein of American Horror Story as opposed to Black Mirror, so it is supposed to go limited per the rules, but the academy cannot really police first seasons because who really knows what the future holds? Horace and Pete submitted in drama a few years ago because they wanted that guest nomination for Laurie Metcalf, despite obviously being a miniseries, seeing as kind of everyone died. Also, the limited categories are not known for being receptive to relatively lighter fare about relationships, like how we are dismissing Normal People. (Speaking of which, Love Life is not considering drama, but they could even submit there too.) HBO submitted half-hour comedic miniseries Camping in comedy instead of limited just last year.
Anyway, I got eight of the ten half-hour episodes late last week. The first three premiere May 27th and it is one a week after that. Anna Kendrick stars (and produces with Paul Feig), Lesley Manville narrates off-screen, Scoot McNairy recurs, Zoë Chao adds to a great year for Asian representation as the best friend and Jin Ha felt 180 degrees from Devs, even though he basically fills the same role as the boyfriend. The review embargo lifts May 18th, so I will just say that I watched these quickly.

I’m hoping for a comedy submission just to spice up that empty race.

So their release strategy is going to be like Hulu.

May 5, 2020 at 3:54 pm #1203465563If it’s good it would probably get into either. I’d go comedy though because that has multiple questionable slots as opposed to just one in limited. The acting categories are also less competitive if it wants to be a player there.

Wasn’t Camping initially a comedy series though, and then it bombed in critical reviews and ratings so they rebranded it as a “limited series” but in other words cancelled it? I mean where that show was submitted doesn’t matter in retrospect because it was never making an impact.
ReplyCopy URLMay 5, 2020 at 10:40 pm #1203466003They claimed that it was a miniseries (that could theoretically continue), but regardless, the finale was in December, so HBO had more than enough time to move it to limited, even if their original plan was to run it as a series, like Watchmen.

May 13, 2020 at 12:41 pm #1203479862HBO and the academy know that the comedy field needs saving. Concerned that it will be ignored like Looking though.

This is truly the worst case scenario
