I was quite happy with how it turned out. It’s smart about how it provides these characters’ self-justifications for their crimes. The script does a great job of giving us perspective on the characters without ever insinuating that what they’re doing is anything less than immoral, providing us the delusions these characters feed to themselves to get through the day. And it’s all anchored by a really terrific performance by Hugh Jackman, who should be a lock for the Emmy. I thought this was thoroughly entertaining and captivating. Cory Finley was still able to bring some of the flourishes that defined his feature film debut “Thoroughbreds” to a more traditional story. Mike Makowsky’s screenplay was good, though could have been fleshed out a little more when it came to the personal lives of some of these characters. Hugh Jackman was great and was able to run the gamut of emotions without fully boiling over. Allison Janney was a lot of fun and I missed her when she kind of disappeared in the second half of the film. Geraldine Viswanathan was also very good and it’s good to see her continue to capitalize on her breakout performance in “Blockers.” A TV Movie Emmy nomination should be an easy get, and Hugh Jackman should land a nomination. Hell, he could even contend for the win but maybe that depends on Mark Ruffalo’s performance and if a TV Movie performance can beat Miniseries performances. Allison Janney would also be a likely nominee almost any other year, but I think the “Mrs. America” ladies may prevent that this year. Ok so some of this worked really well:
1)Jackman was amazing.
2)Janney stole the show. Emmy winner again? i think so.
3)Geraldine Viswanathan is a star. Where they found her idk but she killed it.
4)Annaleigh Ashford was excellent
1)The actor playing the husband wasn’t good.
2)The pacing seemed a bit rushed towards the end.

I thought this was awful. No wonder it didn’t get picked up for distribution. How did they manage to make an interesting story so….uninteresting? Jackman and Janney could get nominations but neither deserve the win.

They are 90, not above 90. My take from three weeks ago:
I am baffled by HBO spending $17.5 million on this at Toronto. As you know from the reviews, it is a fine movie, but there are so many movies that are merely fine that go through the festivals with big stars, then flop theatrically and are quickly forgotten. Why did HBO pay more for this than Amazon paid for The Report? This was destined just to go the way of The Front Runner, which premiered at Toronto one year earlier than this, also with Hugh Jackman in the lead role with strong notices portraying a scandalized real-life figure from recent history. Instead of Allison Janney and Ray Romano supporting, that one had Vera Farmiga and J.K. Simmons.
Again, not terrible, but unremarkable and also disappointing just because it is so easy to see the potential. The trailer suggested a playful take on the material in the vein of The Wolf of Wall Street and I, Tonya, but it turns out that they just put all of those moments in the trailer instead of going for that for the whole movie, which would have been more entertaining, memorable and maybe even nuanced. Various lines of dialogue left me with the impression that they actually underplayed the craziness of this real-life story, which you would think would be why they made this in the first place. I do not know what the point of El Camino was, but this is not going to challenge that for the Emmy win.
Jackman gives a strong performance and checks a lot of boxes, so I can report that the nomination that has become inevitable will be justified. Janney is similarly up to the task of delivering a Janney performance, but then she disappears for a very long stretch. It is hard enough to get nominated for an HBO movie these days under the best of circumstances. I have her in my predictions over Margo Martindale right now just because I already have three other supporting actresses from Mrs. America, but even with that in mind, can you really justify voting for Janney doing what she does for half of a forgettable movie over Martindale playing her real-life figure over nine episodes that span a decade and inspire much more sympathy?
Romano is fun as Romano is, but it is a minor role. Then again, his category has a dearth of competition, so who knows? Jimmy Tatro and Annaleigh Ashford are also good comic relief in even smaller parts. Below the line, watch out for Michael Abels. The score did a great job at accentuating the tension in the first half, then became overbearing in the second half as the film got self-serious. I have had trouble rounding out that category anyway and Oscar rejects have been known to cash in their goodwill at the Emmys.April 26, 2020 at 2:26 pm #1203448861
Different from what I thought it would be, but decent. Forgettable though. Jackman is good and I now feel confident in predicting him. The empty race helps. Janney disappears in the second half and I don’t see her happening anymore. I kept her all this time because I have her at 100/1. Yea I thought this was fine, kind of weirdly paced but mildly interesting with good performances. I feel like I lot of scenes kind of dragged out when they could have been cut much tighter to give the film more energy and momentum. The crime for example (literally what this movie is about) doesn’t even come up until at least 30 minutes into the movie. And the bit with the sandwich that they put in the trailer, that works really well there, goes on for like an extra 20-30 seconds in the movie and loses any of the comedy it had in the trailer.
But am I the only one that was expecting a comedy? Sounds from comments above like I wasn’t, but the trailer definitely lead me to believe this would be more of a satire then a straight drama, which is what it turned out to be. I chuckled a few times, basically all at moments that were in the trailer.
With all that said, Jackman and Janney are both very good, and I would have no problem with them getting noms (especially Jackman)April 26, 2020 at 3:42 pm #1203448927
Definitely solid, if not a bit formulaic. Jackman is particularly good here, though, and I feel like he’s so convincing in this that some might overlook how strong of a turn it actually is. Janney is good, too, but I don’t know if it’s nomination worthy. I wouldn’t begrudge it, though. Too bad Romano didn’t have more to do, he’s always great in dramatic roles but this didn’t have much meat to it. Nice to see some theatre actors Ashford, Shamos, and Dhillon pop up, too.
