I know we got a lot of the winners we expected last night, but there were a few surprises – what do we all think were the biggest ones?

For me I think it has to be Unorthodox nabbing Directing.

Unorthodox nabbing Directing is the Jason Bateman of this year for me. I was previously thinking it was a frontrunner and then thought it had no chance with the competition it faced. Well deserved win though!

However I have to say the biggest surprise for me was Mark Ruffalo. Sure he probably was deserving (haven’t seen his performance) but considering how mixed in acclaim his show was and how it got less buzz than The Tale did it was a shock to me he managed to pull through against performances from three bigger shows and a TV Movie that ended the trend of episodic pieces of television winning that category.

Yeah, in reality nothing was very shocking at all. I would echo the only two real surprises were Ruffalo and Unorthodox in directing, but those are both hardly shockers.

Hunting winning directing still shocks me! I mean, I always found it more deserving than the finale, but wow. My jaw dropped.

Oh duh! Totally forgot about Hunting. That may have been the biggest surprise

The funny thing was that I was collecting forums reactions and had already highlighted Mark Mylod as the winner, and then I heard the name and was like, “Wait, what?!” This branch, I am telling you.

I am so glad I moved Andrij Parekh up to second. I mean this probably wasn’t on the final ballot but on the nominations ballot the description for the episode was “Boar on the Floor”.

Plus I’m sure directors realised he worked on two of the biggest shows of the year.

Unorthodox for directing, Uzo Aduba, Hunting for Directing, and Julia Garner were the most shocking for me.

FYC Oscars: Licorice Pizza (Best Picture, Best Director, Original Screenplay), The Mitchells vs The Machines (Best Picture, Animated Feature, Original Screenplay), Wes Anderson (Best Director), Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of MacBeth), Andrew Garfield and Robin de Jesus (Tick, Tick...BOOM!), Jayne Houdyshell (The Humans), Stephen Karam (Adapted Screenplay), Attica and Summer of Soul (Best Documentary)

FYC Razzies: Dear Evan Hansen (in all eligible categories)

I was shook. So deserving but you’re right, wow. Was anyone predicting “Hunting” to be the episode to overcome the vote-split? A pretty awesome win though.

Can we talk about how awesome it was to have another female director win for limited series directing? I get that Watchmen probably vote-split, but I’m so happy for Unorthodox. It didn’t deserve to go home empty-handed.

I definitely wasn’t expecting Ruffalo to win. I still believe Paul Mescal gave a better performance.

Probably the biggest shocker though was the evident rebellion against streaming last night. Despite Amazon and Netflix having lots of Comedy and Drama nominations respectively Amazon went from 7/8 wins at the main ceremony in 2019 to 0/8 this year and Netflix went from 3 wins in 2019 and 7 in 2018 to 2. Hulu also got shut out (unless you’re counting Aduba’s win as Hulu).

It must not feel great for Netflix specifically since them putting Schitt’s Creek on their platform was one of the main reasons Schitt’s Creek could do the sweep that it did. Though, maybe they’ll kinda consider it a victory for themselves?

Regardless, the execs at Netflix are definitely going to have a lot of awards discussions after its underperformance at the Oscars and Emmys this year. They’ve basically bought out all the upcoming hyped films so if they still can’t win much at next year’s Oscars, I’m going to be very confused about what they could be doing wrong.

It certainly wasn’t dead last in odds but does anyone know how the win happened? After Reparations last year and now this, I’m seriously confused about how the directing branch awards winners at this point. (Of the two Succession episodes though, I think there is particularly standout directing in Hunting specifically because of Boar on the Floor. Is that the reason??)

This is why I think they’re going to keep Ozark for the 2022 season. They’ve already generated a tonne of buzz for The Crown season 4 with only a teaser being released and if The Crown truly ends up being undeniable due to its greater material then it will be foolish to put it up against an incredibly buzzy final season as well.

I mean I partly think they cost themselves in the Drama field this year because their attention was divided between the two shows.

Will be hilarious if Julia Garner ends up being the new Regina King and if on top of that she wins twice in 2022 for Ozark and Inventing Anna.
