I’ve reached the season finale of S1 of Pose and I’m really confused. How the hell is Billy Porter  the LEAD ACTOR? He’s barely in it. Half of the cast show up more than him? Can anyone explain this to me?

How is he NOT the Lead Actor? The show introduce him basically as a father figure alongside Blanca for the first episodes, and at the latter half he gets a big real storyline on his own, which brought Billy Porter’s performance the win.

I guess because the Angel storyline was so dominant back then, you could end up not caring as much for Prey Tell, but he really was lead all along.

    Emmy winner Matthew Macfadyen!!

He was for sure not a lead in S1, I agree. I believe they campaigned him as lead because he was the biggest name from the cast. Damon and Blanca were the true leads.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

No Porter was not a lead in season 1. But he was borderline enough that I don’t mind especially given his increased relevance in later seasons. He actually won my supporting actor prize that year.

He would have never won against Dinklage so it was a great strategy from FX.

I disagree, there was a lot of hype for Porter’s performance and if Mendehlson could beat Dinklage, so could Billy.

This thread reminds me of when Evan Peters, Kate Mara and James Van Der Beek all received higher billing than Billy Porter, MJ Rodriguez and the rest of the series regulars. I mean I get that they all were more famous and probably had better agents (and Peters and Mara had significant roles that I thought were nomination worthy that year personally) but it just rubs me the wrong way. Van Der Beek essentially had a similar type of guest role as Patti LuPone in season 2 as well 💀💀💀💀.

FYC: Better Call Saul and The Good Fight in all categories including Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Also side note but I wonder what would have happened if Porter was actually submitted in supporting? I’m sure he would have gotten in regardless (that field was barren) but who would have replaced him in lead?

Would they have returned to Schreiber like they did with Davis or would Madden have broken in (and potentially won?)

Also worth remembering that in the interim between S1 & S2, Porter himself was becoming a mainstream celebrity / personality due to his iconic red carpet looks at the Oscars & Met Gala. Add in the fact he was pulling promo double duties that summer as S2 was airing at the same time as peak campaigning for S1 (June 2019), and if you only watched only the S2 premiere you could see he was the undeniable lead of that season. That was justification even for his S1 placement.

This would’ve allowed Bob Odenkirk to win for his amazing performance in the S4 finale

I think Porter gets in to that category (which was 7 on a 2% rule) and probably kicks out…Allen and Kelly, retrospectively? (as Sullivan and Esposito have since repeated). I still think Dinklage wins.

Is it possible Brian Cox might have gotten in by that point? They were largely done with Ray Donovan by then I think, and I believe by voting for Bodyguard it was fairly clear it wasn’t coming back or wasn’t coming back for a while. I remember Madden doing an interview that made me flip from “this absolutely has to come back to” “oh, wow, no, it probably should not”

I would love to think so but actors unfortunately have never seemed to care about Better Call Saul.

If we’re going by the lineup that year Bateman probably would have won if Porter went supporting unless whomever was originally in the next place for nominations ended up building lots and lots of hype post nomination (à la Zendaya and Comer).

I’m perfectly fine with Porter’s lead placement all three seasons.

I actually have a feeling Odenkirk will win next year a la Rhys for The Americans and Hamm for Mad Men.
