Really loved season 1 of Bridgerton mostly for the chemistry between Phoebe and Rege-Jean so not sure what to expect for season 2

I finished the first episode of season 2 and really liked it. Simone Ashley is so good as Kate Sharma and I loved her scenes with Adjoa Andoh (who is excellent as always).

I got up this morning and decided to watch the first episode of Bridgerton. It’s got a different vibe, but still kept my attention. I know this season’s focus is on Anthony, but Eloise or Benedict would have been more interesting for me. Anthony just isn’t very exciting.

I don’t think I’ll binge watch, but maybe make it my ‘watch an episode a day’ thing.

    Life is a thin thread.
    We hang on tightly knowing
    it will snap one day.

I unashamedly loved the first season – and this season is even better. The costumes, the music, the humor, the characters, the PASSION honey!! Ashley and Bailey’s chemistry is undeniable. I felt breathless when Kate was stung by the bee, and then in the library. ugh, I’m only halfway through and I cannot wait to finish.

I wasn’t particularly impressed with Chandran’s performance, and then episode 6 came around… WOW! She was amazing!! I need the Sharma Sisters at the Emmys

Enemies to forbidden lovers is such a great romantic trope that I can’t recall ever being explored (at least not recently on something as mainstream as Bridgerton) but that would fail flat without Bailey and Ashley’s chemistry, obvious was the first horse ride and just continued percolating throughout the season.

Have two more episodes left in the next week (needed a breather after everything in episode 6, whew) but what a terrific season so far.

I absolutely loathed the first season of this show but I have to say I thought this one was an absolute hoot to the extent that I’m dumbfounded as to how critics thought this season of the show was a drop down from the first? Was it because there were less sex scenes (which the lack of is something I actually thought made this season more charming as it was more focused with the romance in hand)? Was it because of Rege-Jean Page’s exit? Whilst I did appreciate the first season’s attempts at incorporating diversity into a genre that has historically lacked such a thing I honestly thought it was done in such a clunky manner that it was more problematic than helpful. Here however I thought the handling of the Sharma family (and even other characters of colour like Lady Danbury) was great. Each principal poc character in the show felt like they actually had an identity here and the Austenian depiction of the Sharma family was truly a groundbreaking milestone in Asian representation. Each member of that family wasn’t used as a narrative device to fuel a Bridgerton or a Featherington’s storyline and really stood out on their own. I also think the writers were really embedding some really subtle social messaging around the hurdles and otherisation of South Asian people without exploiting or depicting issues around trauma and racial micro-aggessions but rather with the use of issues like class that was really inspiring to see.

I thought Jonathan Bailey and Adjoa Andoh were the standouts of the first season who I actually thought gave awards worthy performances and both really shone even more this time round. Bailey really matured into this role quite well and even in the most quieter and light-hearted omens of the show you could really feel the internal conflict of the character. His incantation of regency era dialogue puts a lot of the other ensemble members (primarily the other two Bridgerton brothers) to shame. Adjoa Andoh really brought a lot of nuance and wisdom to her role this time round and was given room to create a more succinct characterisation. I didn’t really think much of Ruth Gemell and Golda Roshuevel last season but I thought the former had a really nice showcase this year and the latter gave a delightfully deadpan comedic performance. The star here however is Simone Ashley who really to sum things up brought out the rawness and humanity that should really be a requisite in dramas like this. I hope her career really explodes after this.

Is this show still a silly flurry Shonda Rhimes period soap? Yes. Is it without its faults? No. Phoebe Dynevor still gives a wooden performance and the Bridgerton brothers sub-plots were meandering and insufferable if one was being polite. But Bridgerton really found its footing this season and as a result had a delightful glow up. I wouldn’t give this show a drama series nomination but I also won’t mind if it does get one. I’d have given season one a 4/10 score whilst I’d give this season a 7.5 (maybe even 8) out of 10 score.

FYC: Better Call Saul and The Good Fight in all categories including Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
